Hi, I am recently accepted into a DO school through their post-bac program. However, I want to reapply to a different DO schools that I want to go to.
If I defer my admission at the current accepted DO school, am I allowed to apply to other DO schools during my year off? Do DO schools have a system where they know which students are accepted into the other program (even though it's not through AACOMAS)?

no guarantee you'll get accepted. why take the risk?

The AACOMAS I believe only asked about matriculation and not acceptances. However, you have to remember that you need to know the details of how your deferred acceptance works. In most cases, it will state that you cannot apply to other schools.

Schools are asked by AACOM to report their acceptances by mid-may (a new "requirement"). So this adds another level of uncertainty as to what schools will know about the acceptances you hold (we don't know if this applies to deferred acceptances). The risk level of what you are doing is now at an all time high.

It's mostly due to financial reason. The current accepted DO school is way more expensive than what I can afford, so I'm just trying to see if I could retake the MCAT and then apply to the school I was waitlisted before.

i'm an international student and i can't get a federal loan to cover for me... my parents can't afford to pay for this school either. -_-
Speak with the financial aid dept at the med school. Most people take out loans for med school and the school can give you info on how you can do that as an international student.

Agree with above as first choice. If not, try to defer and find a job and then save up. Then combined both what your parents are able to pay with what you have earned.

I don't like saying this but you might want to look into private loans, if you can't find anything else.

Some schools will grant a deferral for a good reason and you may have to submit proof of your reason, applying to different schools will not be a good reason.

I agree. However, not what I was getting at with my response. This person cannot get federal loans and my suggestion was to save up money for that same school for a year to combine with what his parents are willing to pay.

He will have to get a private loan.
Yeah.. I have to get a private loan but the thing is it is very difficult for me to find a cosigner. I completely understand that it's hard for someone to trust me with a $300k loan. 🙁

Your parents don't want to cosign?

Again, i'm an international student. The cosigner has to be a US citizen. My parents aren't even residents here. 🙁

My mistake. It might come down to you taking private loans.

Just keep in mind that most DO schools are not cheap. Some instate DO schools are cheapER, but since you're an international student, it probably won't apply. LECOM is about the only DO school that I can think of that would be cheap, but you'll still probably have to take out something around $200K over the 4 years.

Out of curiousity, what makes you think that you'll be able to get into another DO school? What will you do during this 1 year off to enhance your application over and above the post-bacc program you just completed that will earn an acceptance to another school? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. You have an acceptance - you probably shouldn't burn that bridge.

If you decide to take a year off, don't piss it away. You should probably work and save money. Find a credit-worthy cosigner for your loans. Take out what you need for school (tuition, fees, books), and beyond that, only take out the absolute minimum you need to survive. Live with roommates. Get a bicycle or use public trans. Don't take out the maximum allowed for cost of living.
