My better half started residency recently and we're having some student loans problems. I have to admit I haven't had time to fully get what's going on, since residents don't have a lot of time!

She has quite a few different loans and they are in the grace period. She wants to consolidate and defer during residency, but the lenders won't allow that since she's still in the grace period. Can you defer your loans even if they haven't entered repayment yet? I'm pretty sure you can consolidate before they reenter payment, but I think the lenders might have refused that as well.

Anyone ever heard of that? I'm kind of confused and definitely frustrated since student loan deferment was a condition of our doctor loan mortgage and they might refuse to fund the loan if we don't get this resolved somehow.

My brain may short-circuit from the rage soon. 😛

Thanks!

I haven't done consolidation yet, but I do remember people just getting all the paperwork and approvals in order months in advance so that their consolidation occurred at the end of the grace period. By doing that, they got the 6 months of deferrment from the regular loans and then got an additional 6 months of deferrment with the new consolidated loan.

Actually, I think that you forfeit your 6 months of grace when you consolidate, meaning as soon as you consolidate you go into repayment. You don't get that 2nd 6 month grace period that you mention.
