what does it take to defer for a year? I know some schools wont let you do it at all.

If I was to get accepted and defer for a reason such as a medical mission abroad would this be ok?

I think so Cerb. Lots of people take a year deferment to do other things(peace corps, family situation, etc). I don't think it would be a problem as long as you let the med school know in advance.

ive been told by peace corps reps that its better to go through medschool first, then register. you can help them out a lot more that way.

probably but I guess I am somewhat afraid that after medical school I will be far in debt and interested in starting a career; thus less likely to do pursue things abroad. I certainly hope the above doesnt actualize but if it does than I feel I may have missed out on something important. Further, i really want to see the world which is something that i am afraid i may never be able to do if I go straight to med school.

Though chances aer I would still just go directly to med school, it is nice to know your options.

Most schools *will* let you defer, even if they say they strongly will not in their admissions literature. The point is, it depends why you are deferring. Certain schools, like MCW as I recall, will let you defer voluntarily, whereas others will only grant deferments for very serious reasons (ie death of a close loved one, disabling sickness, etc).
