Deferred Acceptance, what next?

Hey guys, so i recently got an email saying that im on the schools waitlist but if they dont open it up to find me a spot for this years entering class, then they are offering me a seat for next years entering class. How should i respond to this email? does this make it more likely that i will get a seat if one opens up for this year? I love the school and im really happy i got the acceptance but im also wondering if its a possibility to get in this year still too.

Congrats on the acceptance! I was in a similar situation, where I was on a hold list to get in that cycle if a spot opened up or a guaranteed spot for the following year. Since this was my number 1 choice for many reasons, I was happy with that scenario and declined acceptances elsewhere. I was planning to just continue working until the following year rolled around. However, I was high up enough on the hold list that I moved off it to a spot for that same year within a month I want to say. But I ended up having to defer anyway a few months later because I found out I was pregnant and didn't want to figure out having a newborn and being a first year.

I would say just hold tight. If you want to go here for sure, either this year or next - that's where you'll be. If you don't want to 'waste' another year then best course would be to take another acceptance and release the spot they're holding for you to someone else.

Hmmm, I would say there's no need for a LOI as they are guaranteeing you a spot for the following year. Depending on how they have their waiting list organized, you may be near the top or near the bottom - I personally don't think a LOI will change that. I assume I was near the top of my school's list because I'm an older student? Who knows.

Has the school formally given you notice that you will be a part of their following year's class if a spot doesn't open up for you this year?

The Email they sent says that I am still being considered for this year but :

If we are can not offer you a seat in the Class of 2023, the Admissions Committee has decided to offere you a seat for the following year (Class of 2024)

This more or less what the email said.

So don't send a LOI? I talked to an adcom over the phone earlier yesterday and they told me sending a letter is a good idea

If you spoke to an adcom for this specific school, I would probably take their advice. However, I would tend to agree with others and say a LOI is unlikely to change things at this point. It can’t hurt you since you already have a guaranteed seat for next year, but it may not help you.

I talked to the adcom 2 hours before i received this email so am wondering if i should call and ask if i should still send it or at least to ask them what to do next. It seems like i should just be waiting to see how it unfolds from what i see from you guys so i think thats what i will do

If I did have to wait a year/ be differed, does that mean I can reapply this upcoming cycle just to see where else I could get in? Maybe if I wanted to go for MD for example?

I’ve seen before that if granted a deferral, you agree not to apply again to other schools.

You telling them “yes, I will accept the 2024 seat if nothing else” is proof enough that you’re willing to go there above all else. That’s stronger than any LOI you could ever write.


Accept their offer and hang on tight. The worst case scenario is that you get into medical school. Congratulations.

Thank you! The admissions committee rep for the school over the phone highly recommended that I send a LOI so I did. He /she emailed me back saying it's a very well written and helpful letter. Maybe it was a waste but I guess it's better than nothing. As you said, I'll just hang on tight from now on. Ty for the advice.
