I am lucky enough to have just gotten accepted into BUSDM. I am a little concerned (as I've seen many others are as well) about the drastic debt that lay before us.

I just found out that you can defer your enrollment for a year, which might make me take additional coursework and an extra $3000 deposit. However, if I did that, I could work for a year and save up some money for dental school, and maybe I wouldn't have to take so many loans?

Would any one recommend doing this? 😕

I don't know if that is the best idea but it wouldn't hurt to do it if you can hold your seat for the next year class but holding off one year to save up seems rather impractical unless you make a modest income now. You would be holding yourself back one year of a DDS income if you put off the year. There is no bad choice here since you will get into dental school regardless but its a matter of personal preference so its up to you.

Good luck

I'm not sure that I can comprehend this logic... How much do you make per year now minus taxes?

Imagine loosing the $3,000 + tuition at whatever school that will be not too beneficial for your DDS/DMD since you're accepted + you'll pay more on the 7%/yr average dental school inflation + cost of living will increase - working as an actual dentist and honing your trained skill....

Financially, this is a bad idea, unless you already have a job that pays a considerable salary, like 75k-100k, that would make it easy to save some tuition money each month. Taking a 30k a year job probably won't make that much of a dent in the amount of loans you'll have to take out. Also be sure to consider you're losing a year of income as a dentist.

Yes, I see all of your points. I thought if I could get a job that even pays $30k then it'd help, but I didn't consider inflation. Thanks for the advice!

Keep in mind, your year of lost income as a practitioner comes off the back end of your career. (unless of course you plan to work 1 year later in life due to the deferral).

I thought about doing the same thing but with IBR as an option it doesn't make sense to defer. Just take the loans and deal with them later.... no biggie.

I know someone that got a deferrment, but their child died a couple weeks before school started. with that being said, i think that you need to have a valid excuse for requesting a deferment to begin with, but check with the school. Check school website or student handbook.
