deferring payback time due to specializing?

Is this something you can do? just to clarify what i'm saying....if you go on an HPSP..and do well enough to say..get into a 2 yr ortho program....can you NOT have the military pay for it, finance it yourself and still only owe four yrs in the military as a specialist? Or if ur on the HPSP, get into a specialty program...the military automatically pays for it and you owe even more time in payback years (6 in the case of ortho)? does this make sense?
