Hello-

Is anybody decided that they will defer their acceptance until next year?? If so, what did you ask for and was your letter specific or rather general. I guess I am wondering what they are looking for.

Thanks

I'm deferring, but I really didn't have a choice. I'm pregnant and they actually suggested it and then told me to write a letter and officially ask to defer.

Sorry, not much help for you, I'm sure.

I'm deferring. I'm a huge fan of deferral: I deferred undergrad too, and it was one of the best decisions of my life.

Anyway, I was pretty nervous that my deferral wouldn't be granted, since basically I don't have a solid reason. I want the deferral b/c I'm getting married in August. My finace starts his Ph.D. at Stanford in September. I'm headed to UC Davis, which is about 100 miles from Palo Alto, and I just wasn't excited about moving out on my new husband a month after out wedding. Not the most PC of reasons, I know, but it's mine. I pretty much explained all of this, and mentioned a job I've applied for but haven't gotten yet (health policy research, so at least it's relevant). But they granted it anyway.

Good luck!

Has anyone been denied a deferral?

I bumped up the <a href="http://forums.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012321#000007" target="_blank">"Who's deferring?" thread</a> and also <a href="http://forums.studentdoctor.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012679#000000" target="_blank">one on "Deferral excuses."</a>

I deferred last year. They normally will accept any excuse as long as you aren't moved off a waitlist - but then sometimes they will. I did because my wife and I just had a baby and we wanted to get all of our finances in order.

A word to the wise,

My deferral was denied. I had called the office and asked them about the process, and was led to believe no problem. I later found out deferrals are granted at the school only for extreme circumstances, which mine apparantly was not.

So be careful, ask at the office, but try to talk to someone as high up as possible (e.g. assistant dean, dean, head of admissions). Do not assume that you will get a deferral. I agree that trying to talk to students who defer would be helpful.

Kimya, do you mind telling me which school you were denied from? I'm thinking of deferring my acceptance and don't know if I should even bother this late in the game.

Thanks!
