i'm applying this year but plan to take a year off before i actually start in fall 06. from what i've heard, most schools will let you defer if you submit a request explaining why you want to. does anyone know of any schools that tend not to let people defer, or have a strict policy about it? anyone had problems trying to do this?
thanks!

I think that I remember from UCSF's website that they have a very strict policy about deferring. I think it says that they only allow people to defer if they are participating in a program or are doing something that will contribute to their medical education. You should check out the website if you are interested in UCSF. I think it's under the application procedure link.

hey fellow wustl grad, UCLA's website is also very anti-deferral.

thanks that helps...i was considering both of those schools, so i guess i need to look at them more closely!

If you already know that you want to take a year off, why not apply next year instead of this year?

i'm planning to travel during my year off and i don't want to deal with the whole admissions process then....i want to just get in now and have everything settled before i leave.

Most schools that allow deferrals will only do so under special circumstances. I'm not sure how many of them would grant a deferral for travel.
