I always sort of understood what was meant by x is a function of y. It just means that one value depends on another. However, I notice they speak of the "work function" etc. I am just assuming function=equation. Is this correct?

Work function is an idiomatic expression, it is the amount of energy needed to remove an electron from a solid.
