It's really hard to tell, because who knows what that interviewer was going for. I had an interview like that for graduate school where the interviewer asked me one question and then spent the rest of the time talking about what type of research he did (we didn't even do research in the program) and I still got in.

The optimistic part of me wants to tell you that maybe you were such a shoe-in that he wanted to sell you on the school instead.

There's nothing you can really do now, but I hope you receive good news soon!

That is probably 1/3 of the interviews I have been on so far (granted MSTP is a bit different) Kick back, enjoy the stories, and try and ask good questions. I don't think it was a test.

The interviewer is trying to sell you as well as trying to determine if they want you there. In some cases, as long as you didn't show up wearing a banana hammock bathing suit or sucking your thumb, the feeling is that you'll be a good fit and the selling should commence. Then too, some people love to hear themselves talk and as long as you are a good listener they'll write you a good review.

So I had an interview the other day that was....one-sided. I was only asked very superficial questions about my application but he spent most of the time talking about how great the program was like their research, grants, education etc. I tried to interject to a few times but it felt uncomfortable as he seemed to really be passionate about talking to me about the school and himself.

Not sure what to make of this interview, was it a test to see if I was a good listener? or to see if I was brave enough to keep interrupting him? I'm pretty sure I smiled and nodded for 30 minutes or more and was disappointed he didn't probe me about my activites or give me a chance to sell myself. Any thoughts? 😳
Sounds like this interviewer really, really wants you at his school!
