Short and sweet, will let it die once any suggestions have been made.

Basically, I'm curious to know of any index or searchable listing of conferences by subject/topic and date. I'm aware of PubsHub but don't have an institutional subscription or the funds for an individual one. My goal would be to find conferences to submit to that work both for my timeline (mostly affected by when I can get funded during the academic year) and the content of what I hope to present. I have a few niche projects that I'd like to do something with but that are not currently publishable and am hitting a brick wall here.

Thanks!

What Goro said but will also add that a lot of societies have local chapters which have annual or semi annual meetings that are always looking for presentations. National conferences are harder to present at but still doable. I had a poster presentation at ACEP as a MS2 but I was also presenting on the coattails of a doc whose CV is about as long as Harrison’s. My advice would be to go to an attending with a lot of research experience in the field and get their advice. They will also likely know contacts to set you up.

Your question makes no sense. You're going about this completely backwards. You need to first find a mentor or project, then do the work, then pick an appropriate conference, then write an abstract to submit to that conference.

What's your goal here? Just CV padding? That's basically what it sounds like.

I'm glad you stop by from time to time

Thanks! It's only when I'm kinda bored or procrastinating though 😉

I'd also add that presenting at a conference doesn't necessarily have to be original research. Could also be a case report. Though those are essentially meaningless to any training program that is using a conference presentation as part of its interview/rank criteria

OK, lets suppose you finish your research.
first you should focus on getting published this is much more important than presenting a poster.
when you are trying to get published you are gonna have to look for the appropriate journal to publish in.
now you are ready for the next step.

1. look at other articles that have been published in that journal and google the authors and see what conferences they presented at.
2. ask friends who practice in that specific field to see what conferences they attend. or for them to ask their professors.
3. check the associations related to your research go on their website and see what conferences they have; what @Goro said.

Thanks all for your helpful posts and suggestions. It seems I may have asked my question in a way that misled, or there just isn’t anything out there like what I’m looking for. Basically, I was seeking a searchable index of upcoming conferences. I have ongoing projects not yet ready to publish and would like to present some of the preliminary data. I can only make this work in certain months due to school schedule. Ideally I would punch in a search for conferences in “X” field during “Y” months and see if any are occurring that I might submit to. I’m well aware of how to find conferences the old fashioned way as you all described above, just looking for a timesaver.

I’ll go ahead and reply to each of you for closure then probably abandon the thread before it turns argumentative.

Depends upon the specialty the subject matter is in. Let's say it's Dermatology.

Look up whatever societies there are for Dermatology, and then go to their website.

That should tell you when they have their meetings, and where

I just get my advice and recommendations from talking to research professors and attendings because they are far more knowledgeable on these matters.

Thanks to you all for replying and sharing this helpful info. I’m not new to research by any means and am aware of these methods, they just don’t really address the specific question I was asking about whether or not a searchable database is out there. Still, thank you for the replies!

It makes sense to me, just looking for a database of conferences to attend or submit work to.

In regards to your critique, I have mentors on all projects I’m currently involved in but for a handful of them my role is mostly independent. As in, the mentor is there but the project has always been my idea and I am the one carrying it out. I said I had work ready to submit but am trying to find out where, I feel you may have misread my post or something. I’m not just looking for conferences to then pull together some BS to submit to them.

Goal is not CV padding, but to take projects that are in progress or complete but never presented and make something productive of them while furthering the scientific process. What good are findings if not disseminated to others in the field? Additionally, in the past I’ve often gotten great feedback at conferences that has guided my further work in a project due to the crowdsourcing of minds and input of those with expertise that is different than my own. Also I f I’ve done the work already but it is not represented on my CV anywhere I’d like to amend that. To me that is accurate representation, not padding. I’m not attempting to submit the same abstract to a ton of places, just one that best fits its topic and findings.

Thanks for your input though

Thanks for your suggestions. In the same way you are saying look for the appropriate journal, I’m here looking for the appropriate conferences to present incremental findings at. My goals are listed in the previous post but in a nutshell for me presenting posters and such is an integral part of the research process that guide says progress towards an eventual pub. All projects are different and while some are rapidly publishable others may take much more time to be ready. Id like to remain productive and seek feedback on them in the meantime for those like that.

As for the rest of your comments, they again miss the point of my question in that I was asking if any sort of database or searchable listing of upcoming conferences exists. Still, I appreciate you taking the time to propose these suggestions.

Think that about does it. In short, seems the answer to my actual question is no.

Thanks to those who replied. Mods, feel free to close or delete.

I don’t look for searchable databases because it isn’t necessary since the research professors and attendings have a better understanding on where to present. They also could make better suggestions based on specific information provided and what has been accomplished so far.
