Hi I am almost done with AMCAS extracurricular and I am confused if my experience is shadowing or volunteering. I did BOTH at this hospital last summer because my school has this program that lets us volunteer for certain hours, and use rest of hours to shadow doctors. How should I classify it on AMCAS?

I volunteered as patient escort, and helped out in the emergency room. But I also went to surgery room and shadowed doctors upstairs. I dedicated a couple hundred hours in total.

Which classification matters more for medical school? Volunteering or shadowing?

I'd list them as separate activities with hours separate.

I had a similar issue last cycle - I did both volunteering and shadowing at a community clinic. I split it up into two activities; I put the shadowing part into one activity slot (combined with my other shadowing experiences) and listed the volunteering in a separate slot.

Yup as said before, make them 2 activities and separate the hours.

Oh great idea! Which one did you pick as most meaningful?

I assume this was directed toward me? I actually chose neither as one of my most meaningful…
