Holy moly!! Congrats on the awesome choices.

I’m leaning toward casting my vote for Stanford, but I agree that second look will be important for getting a more accurate vibe. After all, you WILL be spending a lot of time with your fellow MSTPeeps!!!

As much as support system is important, what you report about Vandy in your field of interest is concerning to me and it doesn’t sound like it would set you up as well for your career. So I’d scratch that one off the list and focus your attention on the other two.

(Pains me to say that because family + support network is invaluable! But since you’ll be benefiting from that sweet stipend maybe you can shell out the money for some extra flights home? Also there’s something to be said for expanding your social and professional network, and the west coast is the best coast— I bet you’d enjoy it!)

Full disclosure: I am also on the MSTP WL at Stanford. Because of that. I can’t rly weigh in on this in good conscience, but I will say that research wise the decision looks like it comes down to Stanford or Michigan for you. Reiterating what the other person said, the weak dept and lack of PI depth to work with at Vandy is concerning and would, for me, be a dealbreaker. PhD is half of the MD/PhD experience and you should go somewhere where you are confident you will have breadth and depth of resources for your interests and be well supported.

I’d say definitely go to second looks and rly try to get a feel for the programs (culture wise and also talk to more PIs! Maybe Vandy can still surprise you) and see what is the place where you feel you will be happier, more productive, because that will also determine your success. In terms of impressivenss of match list I agree it’s Stanford > Michigan > Vandy

Congratulations!

Curious which PhD department you are looking at if you're willing to share. Vandy MSTP is also on my list right now.
