I think even though Jefferson is further from family, it’d be a very unwise career decision to choose CUSM.

You have the option of a very established mid-tier program (Jefferson) versus a new low tier program (CUSM). It’s a no-brainer.

I would go with Jefferson as well. It's an established, well-known medical school with a huge alumni network as well. It's got more proven success than the new CUSM. Also, it's possible that Jefferson's match list doesn't include as many California programs because of student self-selection in terms of which geographic regions they'd like to go to. I'm sure since you have family in California and a desire to return to Cali, you can still match into California from Jefferson.

I would be inclined to pick Jefferson here. It has a great reputation, matches well in all fields, great location within Philly. Their general surgery department is also very strong - this is important for getting exposure/letters/research come residency time. I don't think you will have any problems matching back in California - this will really be up to you and the strength of your application. Since you've grown up in California, this will be visible on your ERAS application and you will still get the "home state advantage" so to speak.

But I understand that being far way from family is very tough and scary. If you were to pick CUSM because of that I would totally understand. Or if that cost difference ends up being exorbitant. But realize 4 years fly by and career wise Jefferson is the right choice.
