I can't sugar coat this, on the surface, when you have to cheat during an open book exam, it's the sort of thing that makes me say, do something else for the next five or so years, because your medical career might not be over, but it is more likely to be in stasis. An infraction like this makes you look note merely unethical, but lazy as well.

Are you FR, SO, JR or SR? The older you are, the worse a reception you'll get from Adcoms.

I was by credit hours a sophomore.

I thank you for not sugar coating it, it was the worst mistake of my life, I was a lazy student. I somehow thought it was okay, when looking back it was so evidently unethical.

DId you just take your MCAT? I was say apply the last year that your MCAT is good for and in the meantime maybe take some extra classes, postpone graduation by a year if you can so you can continue taking course to better establish your upward trend and also show growth as a student. Perhaps volunteer with students at your university who are being mentored or counseled after an IA be it drinking etc to show that you took initiative not only for yourself but also to help other people work through their mistakes and avoid them. If a program like that doesn't exist maybe start one. You might learn a lot that will help inform how to write about it to Adcoms.

I agree with the above poster. See how long you have until your MCAT ‘expires’ and maximize that time to put as much space between you and this event as possible as well as build a stronger application of redemption.

One does not prove growth by having good grades. The OP is forever tainted by the thought that s/he got his good grades by cheating.

The O P and others in similar situations are facing this mindset from admissions committees:

1) is this the sort of person we want to have in our class?
2) why admit this person when we have so many other applicants who didn't cheat?
Personal growth means growing by being in positions of responsibility, not merely getting good grades. That in time will let an admissions committee say this person before us now is not the same person from those many years ago.

I did not say good grades is growth, I said postpone graduation so you have time to grow as a student and then gave an example of how immediately after. Ultimately the OP is already having all the thoughts you pointed out in your qs, you can either contribute to them already beating themself up and thinking their career is over, or offer useful specific advice about how to be better with examples of success stories you might have come across in your career.

Ahh, I see what you mean; The entire sentences have to be taken together. OP, pay attention!
