Anyone who's in a Dental Frat,

I was talking to my local dentist the other day about if he lived with anyone while in dental school. He said he did, but not just with a roommate or two, but with a whole house of dental students in a dental frat.

I'm curious, do dental frat exist like this today? My dentist claimed it was a great experience because he wasn't living with Animal House crazies, but rather very dedicated dental students from D1-D4. Also, he said it cut down on cost of living big time.

I'm going to the Maryland next year, so if anyone has any insight into a dental frat at Maryland, that'd be great.

Dental frats are solid. They help keep you from losing your mind with academic help, networks and sometimes give you a good event where you can lose your mind in a good way.

The two main dental fraternities are Psi Omega and Delta Sig. Depending on the institution, one will be the "party" frat and the other will be the "reserved" frat. Obviously, both have a good time and both are dedicated to being successful in dental school, but certain types of students tend to gravitate towards each respective fraternity, although it varies from school to school.

Most of the time they are co-ed and usually non-selective, although they can be selective depending on the school. At our school it's basically an excuse to raise money to host social events. At others, it's more about service, etc. Really depends. However, I've never heard of a dental fraternity house before. Interesting.

Interesting, thanks for the info.

I found it interesting, too. He went to Pitt in the 70s, so I'm not sure how much things have changed.

I had been talking to my local dental professional the other day regarding in the event they were living together with any individual while in dentistry school. He or she said they would, and not simply with a roommate or a couple, although with a whole home connected with dentistry pupils inside a dentistry frat.

FYI, some fraternities don't like being called the shortened version "frats" because of the negative connotation.

Or all of you can just make friends like normal people  Frats are stupid.

Rather than wasting your time on frats, just become more involved in your state dental society - you will find amazing mentors, learn about things affecting dentists and the general profession, and build a better network.

And also, nobody cares about fraternities outside of college. Unless some miracle happens that the guy you want to associate for or buy a practice from is from your same fraternity, there is generally no benefit after college for being in a fraternity.

I don't know I have friends who have gotten jobs and residency spots without even applying through dental frat contacts, seems like the network has been worth while in my experience.

Yeah i disagree. Dental frats throw social events all the time, and established dentists are always there for you to conmect with.

Not to mention some of the faculty are in the frat and will treat you differently if you're in the club.

I recommend highly you join the frat. It's fun...never hurts.

Or you could just get involved in your state dental society and do the same and more. Frats are stupid. You could get to know a faculty member without joining a stupid frat.

Or both...you probably would have been a good edition to Lambda Lambda Lambda

nawww, I spent my free time learning how to spell addition :meanie:

Instead of joining frats, just spend time doing what you enjoy and meeting people that share the same interest.

Most people join the dental frats because that's what they like to do. Others enjoy picking out internet grammar/spelling mistakes...bragging to their moms about their nbme scores...and attempting to flirt with girls on sdn posts

To each his own

Being a wannabe Anesthesiologist must free up a lot of time to sdn stalk

I have all the time in the world...that's the best part. Now go troll some more posts to tell girls how beautiful they are.

Man, it must suck to have your schedule so empty that you can post all day on sdn
Just trying to make the day of an under appreciated resident.

Why are you so particularly enamored with hating the "Greek" system? Is it because some of them appear elitist? Because they like to segregate themselves and think their perspective and way of life is the best? If so, you're doing the exact same thing. Just because people do not engage in the same activities or have the same opinions as you, does not necessarily mean their value as a person is so low that they deserve generalized statements of hate.

Give it a rest. If you do not like fraternities then so be it. To each his own. This one-minded thinking of yours won't serve you well in the future as a clinician or as a member of society.

I was also a part of a social fraternity in UG and intend to join a fraternity in dental school as well.

Yes, us residents hate a free sunday...?

There are omfs residents and pd's on here all the time...they're going to be able to figure out who alxspider from texas who scored 74 on the spring 2013 nbme is from his posts when he interviews...and theyre going to remember that he hated people in frats and thought they were dumb...and i can promise you many many of them were in a dental frat and loved it

So im just confused as to why youre so vocally anti frat when there's no way that sentiment could help you

No, because they serve no other purpose in school other than causing problems. We had 5 incidence of rape at aTm involving different frats. One of the girls that was raped was a friend of mine, so there is a personal reason for me hating the greek system. The worst part is that these dbags try to get away with it using people they know and think that they are above the system. No remorse, no apology from them - even with there being evidence of using roofies.

Do not confuse my hatred of the greek system with my thinking that dental frats are useless. These two are not the same. Dental frats are useless to me because it is easy enough to make friends in dental school (as you would in real life) without joining these clubs and can do more with your time.

I mean't later when you work.

I have nothing to hide - let me help you with more info: Ugrad: Texas A&M (gig em), dental school: Baylor, top 10%, involved in many clubs and with the state dental society. I will let my hard work speak for me. If someone really doesn't want me at their program just because I think dental frats are a waste of time, then I don't care to go to that program.

Have fun being a CRNA.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but generalizing an entire group of people is a little immature no? Especially if you're an educated doctorate degree holder .

I believe dental frats are financially advantageous as well. According to my knowledge, the rent for houses in uminn are about 300-400$ per month. The money you save from rent alone is well worth it.

Btw, the dues are like 400$ for all 4 years

As I said, my reasons for hating the greek system comes from personal reasons. I know it is not ok to generalize, but is more of a visceral response.

Dental frats are not the same as ugrad frats - they are just a social student club that anyone can join. You don't really live at a house, at least not here.

You just sound seriously socially maladjusted. Your grades and scores aren't going to matter when adcoms pick up on the fact you're an arrogant jerk.

And my wife is a crna, what's wrong with that?

Sablimazing is antagonizing you... But you're picking fights with dental anesthesiologists, crnas, people in frats...you're making enemies left and right

This is the purpose of a dental frat.

Simply sounds like your dental school experience sucks. Our chapter of Delta Sig is awesome. And most of the presidents of student organizations and TA's are members of at least one of the frats (though our Psi O chapter is pretty lame and principally a way for the married folk to mingle; differs by school).

It's a simple formula: pay dues -> party. Repeat -> become a dentist.

Nothing wrong with being a serious introvert, brotha. But don't rain on everyone else's parade.

My best guess is that you have very very few friends in dental school

Stop starting arguments

I'm considering a dental frat, but not sure it would be conducive to studying to live in with a bunch of other guys (though it would be pretty fun). They also need to study, so it might be possible. Do most dental fraternities have frat houses you live in, or do people live separately and have events where they meet up (or both)?

No houses.

Here at Ohio State they have houses. Rent is only $700-800 per SEMESTER which is insane if you want to save money. They have D1-D4 students which is nice to mingle and learn from them. They have a lab in the basement for drilling and waxing which would be amazing (if I were a member) not to have to go to the school to do my lab work. They have a test bank and a dropbox of notes and study guides that you get access to if you are a member. They also throw parties and social events usually after tests and on weekends.

They are great if you are single and want to live with a bunch of people in your same position.

Ucsf has a house too...so they are around

Delts is a great dental frat, both in the US and worldwide. Join if your school has it 👍

I'm surprised no one here mentioned Alpha Omega, the oldest international dental organization around. An oral surgeon I used to shadow was a member in school, and I found that they had a lot to offer. One of the big differences between AO and the other frats is that there's an entire alumni group of dentists all over the world in AO - so when graduation time comes there is a huge potential network. As with any organization, the more put in the more you'll get out. I became very active in my dental school chapter, alumni chapter, and internationally. Because of this, I've had some amazing experiences in the organization and made friends all over the world. Joining AO was one of the best decisions I made in school (besides going into OMFS).

Out of all the dental fraternities out there (Psi O, Delta Sig, AO) - AO is the only one that will be there for you after graduation. Of course it also depends on which frats your school offers.

Feel free to PM me with any questions about AO.
