My friend of mine at columbia told me to work and learn at dental lab for D1and2 before starting D1. Do you recommend it or anything you want to recommend? Thank you

YES do it ! thats the one thing i wish i did before starting dental school. It'll make your life a lot less stressful. While your at it start memorizing cranial nerves and pick up a good biochem book. It'll put you ahead of others.

anyway you can make your life easier in dental school, i say go for it. everyone says take vacations and relax but how many times can you really go on vacation in the 6-8 months leading up to start of school? try to look at as many teeth as possible learn the basics. 👍

Shut up nraouf👎

I recommend that you relax as much as you can in the time leading up to dental school. Why stress yourself before school starts. You will have time to do lab work and learn everything you need to know once you start school.
Trust me you will wish you spent more time doing other things besides studying/lab work once those exams start kicking in week after week.

Do you self a favor. Relax and don't worry about anything.

Shut up nraouf👎

No need to be disrespectful, there is more than one way to skin a cat and not everyone achieves success that same way, it doesn't make them wrong because you went a different route, just different.

I didn't mean it like that at all. I know nraouf personally. I was joking. Thanks for your concern.

working in a lab won' hurt you at all. Neither will working as a dental assistant. However, most people take some time off as dental school is four years of hard times.

although learning lab techniques before dental school doesn't hurt and can help you be slightly ahead of the curve when 1st year begins, if you have a good eye and good hand skills i would say to just relax and enjoy life until school starts 🙂

I'd say go for it. It'll make your life a lot less stressful, especially second year. If you decide not to, that's fine too...I had absolutely no experience going into dental school and I'm doing just fine but I spend a lot more time outside of lab trying to get projects done.

i know i bought a basic dental anatomy book (got it for ~$2.75 on amazon), not to get ahead of the curve, but to just see the terms and get some of the basic basic terminology down (mesial, distal, occlusal, etc) and the numbering systems and to just see the teeth. i didn't study it, just flipped through it while watching tv or if i got bored. i also wouldnt have traded my brief experience with waxing for anything! i spent MAYBE a total of 5 hrs of outside of lab time to work on projects and that was more for practice for the practicals than it was to play catch up.

summer long vacations for me just weren't possible. do what you want. you'll learn everything you need once you get to school anyway.

Uhh, no, don't waste your time in a dental lab. The lab work in school is mainly during the first two years, and later on in your career you usually have nothing to do with that stuff (Guess what? they don't test you on lab work on the boards exam). If you are really passionate about it, then go work in a lab. But if you want to get yourself ahead of others, my advice would be taking an introductory anatomy, biochem, and immunology class in your undergrad.

Greetings,

To the OP inquiry, if you got nothing to do then hanging out at the lab may be fun (of course with the owner's approval) but I certainly would not make it a priority. Enjoy your free time now because you may not have time to do that while in DS school. DP
