my main concern is keeping a healthy posture and preventing neck pain. Anyone care to recommend any good light weight loupes ...flip ups or TTL? and does the added light help

after doing some searching on the forums i've read some good stuff about the surgitel oakleys M TTL.... does anyone have orascoptic?

I am clueless as to what is good and what isnt. I'm a 1st year and we will have companies that sell loupes comming this spring to a fair where most dental school students by them. I have heard that the high power ones arent good either because you fing yourself lifting your head up and backing up too much.

hey..im a first yr too... i'm trying to figure out which one to buy....there are quite a few companies..and prices vary....the power/magnification some ppl have told me x2.5 is good, and anything more will make it hard to see the rest of the cavity/mouth.....i just want to make sure i buy the right one...esp if i have to fork over a grand for it

i know what you mean. a grand is a lot of money to fork over if you don't like them. i think 2.5x is standard for dentists...there's 1.7x for hygenists. ummm...i'm a d1 too and i don't know much about them either. there's usually a 45 day free trial period...you should take advantage of it!

Love my orascoptic ttl. Took a little time getting used to them, but now I can't live w/o them. I have classmates who have other brands, and they love theirs, so I guess it's preference and getting used to the ones you buy. Definitely get ttl vs flip ups though. considerably lighter.

I went with medlite flip ups. 3.0x 17" working distance. I heard about them on dental town and they are pretty sweet for 300 bucks

My reasoning was why spend a grand on ttl when I am not exactly shure what I need. I wanted a learning pair before I invested sooooo much into ttls.

DentalTown.com seem to always award either Designs for Vision or Orascoptic for the best magnification of the year. I just put my order in for the "Drew Carey" style TTL from designs for vision yesterday and will put an order in with Orascoptic next week when the rep comes to my school. They both have a 45 day trial period so im gonna try them out and send the one i like the least back. Check out dentaltown. There are a ton of posts about magnification. From what ive read, TTL are more durable and lighter. They also give you a bigger field of view b/c they are closer to your eyes.

Did you buy these from their website?

The site looks a little shady. I could not find anything about the company....physical address, phone number, etc.

I noticed they also sell on ebay.

I'd be willing to drop $250 on the safety glasses but their site scares me.

Yea... I gotem straight from the website. Very prompt service (got here in 3 days) and I love the loupes. I used them today on a class I on 8 and 9. There great.

Eventually I will go ttl, but I just wanted something to learn with. When I am done with them I will sellem on ebay for a little less than I paid for them

Go design for visions 2.5x .The field of vision is wider than some of the other companies' loupes. The flip up are also heavier on the nose. You got to get loupes. The profs all grade with them and once you do a crown prep wearing loupes you'll never go back.

I did the same thing through med-lite, for the price and quality it is a good first step. I bought the same pair as super c... ...we have a lot of classmates who have purchased expensive ttls, and even the oakley flip ups- they have had a problems, constant adjustments etc... for the time being I am feeling it out for a while, I have worn TTLs and in my opinion they are a pain because the lenses are in the way- my own opinion but for what its worth, I am waiting to spend the money on nice ones when I know what I am doing, at the worst I'll recoupe some cost on ebay or something because the medlites fit on anyone.

i went with surgitel...they make the 2.5X loupes with Oakley glasses! its kinda like ur pimpin out while surfin through someones mouth!

howd you pull off class I's on 8 and 9?

i have orascoptics (i dont know what the model is but they are the high res. non flip down ones). they are nice, but i never use them. honestly, i dont think loupes are that important except for endo. you definitely want loupes for endo. the only tips i have are 1) avoid at all cost the flip down models-they are MUCH heavier than their non-flip counterparts and are quite uncomfortable for extended periods of time 2)get large lenses to provide maximal eye protection-its hard to appreciate in pre-clinic but there is alot of junk flying around and i dont like my loupes bc i feel like the lenses are too small. as a result, i wear a 10 dollar pair of safety goggles i bought at home depot 90% of the time, except when im doing endo (and even then, only posterior endo).

won't the magnification help me keep my back straighter by not bending down so much to get closer?

Class I on 8 and 9 would be a considered a single surface prep on the lingual surface of an anterior tooth... Have you been doing your homework?

Beyond that... very carefully

Loupes help with my posture...i'm not all hunched over trying to see things. I went with Orascoptic TTL 2.5 mag...great company, great warranty for 8something.

I have orascoptic TTL 2.5 and I like them a lot. I think you can't really go wrong with orascoptic, designs for vision, and surgitel. All three are well respected and will give you a good product.
