Is there a possible route from the dental stream to plastic/cosmetic surgery? I've recently taken a great amount of interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery (face) and I was wondering if this was possible via some combination of postdoctoral programs, etc.

Thanks!

I would say it's possible, but it's almost impossible.

What you need to do is:
Dental school (4 years) > Oral surgery residency with MD (6 years) > Plastics fellowship (1-3 years)

But if you wanna do plastics, I would not go this field. Getting your MD would be a more straightforward way.

But here's an article about people performing plastics without the plastics residency:

Facial cosmetic/reconstructive surgery is within the scope of practice of OMS. Now if you want to do breasts or hands them you need to do a PRS residency after earning an MD.

6 year OMFS program, then do a cosmetic fellowship.

You could do a 4 year OMFS and a cosmetic fellowship, but the 6 year programs will give you a better shot at reaching your goal.
