I didnt know that Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology was a specialty...Im actually interested in pursuing this. I think reading xrays is probably my favorite part of dentistry, and also interested in MRI's and CT scans and what not...I guess I have a few years before I have to worry about a specialty, but at least something to look forward to.

Ive read of a former endodontist doing a residency and opening up a radiology consulting business in North Carolina but most people have told me that the only path for this specialty is teacing and some consulting work in a dental school.

50dent is right, oral radiology today is teaching, research and some consulting... nothing you can really base your practice on.

but...

i think it's tough to say where oral radiology will be in 4 or 5 years. digital radiography is booming and programs like orthocad will become more and more important in treatment plans (especially prostho and ortho cases).

in my last job, i used MRI and CT scans to reconstruct 3D models for neurosurgeries. it was challenging but also very interesting! if you like computers, imaging, and graphic programs like adobe photoshop, you might like the future of oral radiology...

but what do i know? i'm just a predent

Well it maybe true that in a few years a specialty in Oral Radiology may be very useful...and just because you have a specialty in radiology doesnt mean you cant have a regular practice. Im not sure if that justifies the extra schooling...

Are you allowed to practice general dentistry if you specialize? In most cases it wouldn't be a wise financial choice but what about the omfr's ?
