anyone know how to differntiate between maxillary molars, mandb molars, incisors, canines, premolars etc when looking at a radiograph?

Knowing the anatomy. And film orientation.

What's up with all the smart-asses on this forum? Just say something nice or don't say anything at all.

Mandibular molars= two roots, positioned downward in the film
Maxillary molars: three roots, positioned upward in film.

See: http://www.waybuilder.net/sweethaven/MedTech/Dental/DentalRad/lessonMain.asp?iNum=fra0403

Look at the pictures and you should see maxillary molars, mandibular molars, incisors and bicuspids. Looks like every picture has the correct caption except for the picture of the mandibular cuspids. That is a maxillary molar view; don't know what they were thinking when they labeled that one.

Sure my answer was concise, but smart-ass?

I've never used the cotton roll for the opposing arch. Otherwise, Go Army with the good illustrations.

I use to only use the cotton roll on poorly aligned teeth, but now I quickly tape one to the XCP kit when setting it up. I save a lot more time when placing the film with the cotton roll in with less remakes. I think the cotton roll as shown helps.

I don't know if you intended it to be such, but it sure came off like that. The guy asked how to differentiate between teeth, and "knowing the anatomy" is exactly the question he is asking, not the answer to it.

You can quickly figure out if a PA is Mn vs Mx by locating the sinus.

Also, when you look at posterior xrays you can tell whether it's right side up by the upward curvature of the mandible.

Sometime the palatal root is difficult to discern. Compared side by side, a Mn molar will have two well-defined roots where a Mx molar looks more 'cloudy' between the roots.
