Hey everyone! There are some dental schools that have a DAT and/OR GPA minimum requirement in order to apply. If everyone could be so kind enough to share their knowledge about what the minimum is for any dental school they know of, that would be awesome.

So far i know:

UCSF
Science GPA Min: residents: 2.7 Non residents: 3.0
Overall GPA Min:residents: 2.7 Non residents: 3.0
DAT Min: 17 in all fields

U North Carolina:
Science GPA Min: residents: none
Overall GPA Min:residents: none
DAT Min: 18 in all fields

University TX San Antonio
Science GPA Min: residents: none
Overall GPA Min:residents: none
DAT Min: 17 in all fields

This is great! I'll chime in.

Columbia
Science GPA Min: none
Overall GPA Min: none (3.0 & above desirable)
DAT Min: none

Minnesota
Overall GPA Min: 2.7
DAT Min: 18 in all fields (or as they say "students really need to achieve scores > 18 in each sub-test area.")

UPenn

Science GPA Min: none
Overall GPA Min: none
DAT Min: none
Note: "careful consideration will be given to candidates with overall and science grade point averages (G.P.A.) of 3.2 or higher."

University at Buffalo
Science GPA Min: 3.3
Overall GPA Min: 3.3
DAT Min: 17 AA

Are these absolute minimums? I scored a 21AA and have pretty good scores in all sections, but I got a 16 on the PAT. I know that students with 16 PAT have been accepted at some places that say "17 min in all sections." I'm just wondering how concrete these "minimums" are. Should I not even bother applying to those schools with a 16 PAT? Thanks!

Oh, and a friend of mine (also from New England, no connection to Buffalo) got into UB with a 15 QR....far from the "17 min. in all fields".

Yeah, you're right about UB's DAT scores. I was just copying-and-pasting the OP's format and changing the numbers. It's just the average score that has to be over 17 for UB. I just corrected it above. 😉

Good job on this thread. Thanks, Sadly I am not able to contribute. 😀

Hey doc, no problem...

i figured everyone might need this information... It'll really help save money, stress and time trying to fill out applications. I made a few phone calls and some of the admissions people were very honest and told me that the admissions folk have a tendency to "look" for "certain" GPAs and DAT scores... some schools dont even look at anything else before seeing the GPA.

I know University of Pacific DEFINITELY looks at your GPA from your last 2 years before they even look at your DAT. Yeah, if you have a high DAT 24 but a crap GPA less than 3.4, they *may* consider putting you on a waitlist. Having a high DAT just means supposably you're a good "test taker". I think thats crap. Eh, this is what i was told today when i called them...

Some, not all schools follow they're minimum rules... remember its their rules, they can break a few if they want. This thread was just to help those who wanted to know which places they had a better chance of getting in with their scores or which places they *can* apply to without wasting time, money, and stress. Best of luck to you. If you're under the minimum by 1 or even 2 points and REALLY want to go to that school, i say go for it! Apply, write that kick *** personal statement and show 'em up on the interview.

I can tell you about Creighton. They told me to retake the DAT to improve my PAT score. I don't know what their minimum is, or if they even have any.
Thought I should just give you a heads up about Creighton. It was funny, though. They sent me an email asking for a retake, and I sent one back the same day telling them that I will not be able to do so. By night time, there was a 'denied' status on my AADSAS.
I think UDM is also pretty strict about minimum cut offs.

i was accepted to ut san antonio and i had a 15 on my DAT chem section.

Holy cow robsaw... freakin'15.... SWEET!!! congrats on the acceptance and thanks for sharing!

Hi Everyone,
Not sure if this thread has any life left to it...but i have a question regarding dental school.... I spent my undergrad a little more focused on resume building rather than studying...To date i have accomplished the following: 4 publications in neurosurgery, anesthesia technician, worked with a large organ bank specializing in surgical tissue recovery and i now currently work with a medical device company which is breaking grounds in the field of living heart transplants. I travel the US, UK, and EU to instruct MD's on the use of our device during heart transplants. So! My meaning behind this long post.....my GPA is in the mid to high 2's. Do dental schools put a ton of weight on the GPA? If i do fantastic on the DAT/PAT will i be a competitive candidate? Thanks for any advice!

That GPA may shoot you in the foot, but every case is different... So you don't like medical device sales?. I hear those guys kill it, plus you get to see surgery and travel...

The advice you'll get is to "do a masters and get a 4.0 You have to show proficiency in upper level science courses in order to be considered"

And those EC's are awesome, but what do they have to do with dental (anesthesia maybe)? They want to see interest and experience that shows you know what you are gettin into.

Why do they only look at your last two years? I'm sure there are plenty of people who apply after the standard junior year, in which case UOP would only be looking at junior and senior years - most people have finished their pre-reqs by then.

Crap, I did not realize this was an old thead.

It isnt medical device sales. I am a clinical specialist, so i travel to our different clinical sites (i am currently in Berlin) and while i am here i am on call. If they have a heart offer, i go out for the retrieval and make they dont kill the heart while its on the device so to say. I do like it, but in terms of longevity....i am out of the country and away from family for like 30 weeks out of the year, gets old and depressing after awhile haha. As far as the dental specific stuff, i have shadowed many dentists....my mother is a hygienist so i can pick and choose who and what i want to see really. I was told by a dentist that the masters wont really help...it was something i was originally considering though.

What is your GPA? Have you calculated a Science GPA? if so, what is it? If you search you can find lists, mostly posted by DocToothache that show averages, and even lows for all the numbers that matter for each Dental school. Also you can see most of this information if you purchase the ADEA guide to dental schools. If your GPA is in the range it may be worth a shot, but I would study for the DAT and at least make sure you can ROCK it first bc average DATS and very low GPA will not cut it.

to the OP...the information your looking for can all be found in the ADEA handbook.

unless you would like to wait for "doctoothache" to come on and post a spreadsheet for you...i would look into getting that book...TONS of good 411

To everyone. This thread is a year old.. But was brought back up with related ?'s
Molsen is looking for some specific info on his situation.

Thanks! I posted a separate "new" thread regarding my topic as well.

I know of a girl who got into dental school with a 12 in QR, 17 TS, and a 17 AA. She had NO connections.

anything is possible. just shoot for the stars.

i am so inspirational.

*rumor has it she was pretty sexy. 🙂

It's probably not a good sign if you're looking at the minimum GPAs schools will let you apply with.

put yourself in admission shoes, and think which applicants you gonna choose for your school. when there are lots of 3.5 GPA and 19+ DAT that you can easiely fill up your seats, would you bother yourself with considering applicants with GPA 2.9 and DAT 17?

Yes u r right. GPA and DAT depend on the perticular universities and colleges . So we have to follow by their criteria.

Yes, very true. I was just curious that given my background and a DAT of say 22.....would it be worth a shot to apply?

I promise, dental schools will have no problem taking your application money with even the crappiest stats. 👍
