hello everyone.
Was just looking at the FAFSA for dental school and noticed they offered me like
20k in direct unsubsidized
And like 85k in the DIRECT GRAD plus loan...

I know nothing about loans and my family has recently gone from being considered high income to low income (dad lost his job)..

I wanted to know, is there a better deal I can get in a loan? From what I heard the GRAD plus should be your last option and the direct usub should be majority of the tuition? Also, do private schools give that federal Perkins loan? Is that the best one? Please educate me and advice me. If I can fight for a better deal I will. I just want to know what the typical norm is for schools so I don’t get played?

things may vary from schools to schools. since you are a professional student, your parents' income do not factor in how much/what type of loan you qualify for (that is what I am told as far as I know because I did not have to put any parents' income and assets in FAFSA and I still get qualified). so my best guess is the amount you are offered depends on the school you are attending not necessarily the family circumstances.

I am a current DS and this year i got offered 47k unsub and the rest is Grad plus to match COA. I also received next year FAFSA offer which is the same (47k unsub and the rest is Gradplus).

the best person to contact is the school you are attending's financial advisor.

good luck!
