Hey there...

I'm not sure if anyone else has asked this question before in the forums, but does "which dental school you get DDS/DMD from" matter?
Cause, you are likely gonna go and open up an office somewhere and write for eg. " Someone, DDS" and people are gonna come there, and they are not gonna care which Dental school you graduated from. or do they? then what is the idea behind attending a very respected and well-known school?

'd appreciate to know your ideas on this one.

You ask some very good question about why does this prestige matter if in real life it does not. Well guess what. It only matters to us pre-dents. In real world your school name means JACK. It is you that matters more than the school you went to. All the dentists I have talked to have one thing to say that minimize your school debt and go to a cheapest possible school.

As far as I can tell, the prestige of the school you attend will only matter in two cases:
A. You intend on becoming a researcher/professor after graduating. At the end of every one of your articles people are gonna see where you went and you might be lacking in credibility if your alma mater starts with a "West" and ends with a "Virginia". Also, I'm sure going to Harvard would help get you a research position at a school with lots of funding and excellent facilities.
B. You are an arrogant jackass who needs to attend a prestigious Ivy League school just so he can feel better about himself.

If neither of the above two situations fits you, then go to the cheapest school you can find. I've worked in a dental office for 2 summers and not once have I heard anyone ask the dentist where he went to school. If you are an adept clinician, people won't even think to ask where you went to school...they'll be too busy wondering how on earth you finished so fast and why they didn't feel a thing.

Where you go to school only matters to you. You have to choose a school that is right for you, one where you can become the best dentist possible in 4 years. Remember, your degree isn't going to be fixing your patients teeth. It's funny but general dentists out of Harvard tend to be worse than those from BU and Tufts. Go figure.

Thats why the cheapest school is usually the best. If you want to be general. Even if you want to specialize, you are compared to your class via rank. And National boards are all the same across the country and you can outscore a person from Harvard Dent where you come from Howard(I know, its a shocker!).

I personally think it doesnt, matter. Live where the people and environment is nice. And cheap tuition is a plus. And anywhere that is warm.

My opinion

It matters to douchebag predents. Doesn't matter to anyone else in the universe.

Class rank is being used less and less for specialization. More and more schools are adopting pass/fail systems and don't even have class rank. National boards part 1, LOR's, experience in the field and your interview is what decides if you specialize or not. Adcoms for specialty schools do not think class rank is a fair way to size up an applicant. All this is straight from Assist Dean of Admissions of UCSF. Email him if you disagree: [email protected]

For specializing, I do not know the extent of the influence what school you attended has. It may factor in a little. Harvard has to be a bigger plus than Howard...I mean,...come on.

If you're gonna be a GP and have a job lined up, the school you went to means absolutley nothing. Maybe other dentists might care but your patients won't have a clue and won't give a rat's a$$.
