A Modified UTHSCSA formula, which uses a composite of DAT and GPA was used to rank the schools. The formula is:

science GPA x AA/30x 4 + overall GPA

29 Oregon 12.41

this is an unofficial ranking of the dental schools based on the DAT scores and o-GPA of their 2009 D1 students.
can we say that the school with higher ranking is necessarily a better school?

Interesting...what's the bold all about?

Also, doesn't take into account the cost of attendance, which is a big factor (for those who have multiple acceptances). For example...a student (NY resident) that has acceptances to Stony Brook and say, Columbia. SB is the better deal. Also, where are these 2009 statistics coming from? Are they already published by ADEA? Taking into account only DAT and GPA is not a fair indicator, and other subjective factors are also discounted.

Prepare for Tufts and UOP kids to slam this... I have a couple acceptances in the top 6 .. so it's alright for me.😛

bold typed schools are the ones that i was interested in (decided to go to OSU).

im not sure if i can trust this 100% or not...

here is the complete list.

my bad. i think it's 2008.

#1... School you got into
#2... School you got waitlisted
#3... all other schools

No way anyone would pick by those rankings

I second Girlygirl87

Alabama is surely better than UCSF according to this ranking.

Also, State schools are up there mainly because the tuition is cheap, and doesn't necessarily indicate the quality of the program.

Interesting list, but it isn't measuring the quality of the program. Its not how you come in, its how you come out.

+1... well put.

In addition, these rankings don't take into the account that many highly regarded state programs (UCSF, UTSA, UNC, UW, UF, etc.) are mandated to fill a certain number of in-state spots per entering class, which means that they can't necessarily be as selective with in-state applicants as private institutions might be. These are the same programs that are notorious for being extremely selective with out-of-state applicants.

So, like a few others have said already... you'd be foolish if you relied solely on this method to rank all the dental programs in the U.S.

Agreed. Also the formula OP devised doesn't take into account the course load of the applicant. You can have a 3.8 sGPA by just taking the prereqs at a leisurely rate or you can have a 3.5 sGPA by taking an intense science course load. There is no way to determine which of the two candidates are more qualified for a particular school. There are too many unaccounted for factors for this to be accurate, but it is somewhat of an indicator of the competitiveness of the institutions.

The Modified UTHSCSA formula should be used to loosely gauge if you are a competitive applicant for a school. This should be used for private schools, since it doesn't take into consideration heavy in-state bias for most state schools. For example, if your own Modified UTHSCSA number is 12.00, than you have no business applying to Harvard or Penn, who have numbers out of reach. But then again, you could have figured that out just based on their DATs and GPAs.

The Modified UTHSCSA formula should NOT be used to rank schools. If you do, you're a damn fool.

does going to Tufts with a 13.2 make me an underachiever?

You got beef with Alabama?😀

I guess getting into stony brook with a 12.4 would make me an overachiever then. Haha I love all of these number based rankings...stony brook is always on top.

I concur.

According to the formula...
The ADA needs to add another 10-12 schools to the bottom of the list before I even have a shot at getting in anywhere...
