Dental School Rankings

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Of course, it's right here:

www.dentalschoolrankings.com

if the link doesn't work, it just means that the site is busy. Usually during 3 or 4 am in the morning, there are less traffic, check it out then.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, it's a year old, but it gives you an idea. I believe according to the website, the new rankings are coming out in April sometime. I can't wait!

3 or 4 in the morning ?????????????????????????????

get real.

It worked for me last night around 4:32 AM.
So try it around that time.
I'm sure you will get lucky too, very soon.

Thanks Yah-E. That link is so helpfull. I hope you have given me that link when I was applying. I missed it but Fellow pre-dent that link is awsome. Try to check that link out.

Don't be bitter since those ranks came out and Boston Univ. was at #12, behind Tufts and Harvard. Keep your fingers crossed for April. Glad to see Temple was #9. Hope we stay that high for the new ones.

I laugh eveytime I read a post from this thread! One day, maybe just one day, people will learn. 🙄

Until then, we'll stick with this routine.

Just make sure you go to a school that gives a DDS because DMDs aren't licensed to do surgery.

Yeah, this is a direct quote from dentalschoolrankings.com

"These rankings have been adjusted to account for universities offering DMD instead of DDS. The DMD is of a much lower standard, and DMD graduates will need to consult a DDS dentist to attempt surgery or fill prescriptions."

Thanks for the site!!

My favorite section is "What's the best specialty?"

how sad for me, im trying at 3:40 AM and its not working!

My favorite section is "Detailed comparison of MD vs DDS/DMD: hours worked/income/hr and other factor"

Wow I never thought this existed. So... Last night I stayed up until 4am and I actually was able to get on. Must be a very popular site they have to reindex frequently, because I see a poster above was still unable to access it at 3:40am. 😉

Whdy oesn't someone just copy and paste the list? Wouldn't that be easier than everyone trying to stay up?

The fact that you want to be a doctor scares me.....think about it

Man 2:15p and I got on...wow was I lucky!

Boy have the rankings changed a bunch since I saw them last when I was applying back in 2002-03.

Yah-e, good find once again!

Yah-E

Finally a web page that tells you exactly how to get in to each school, the gpa, the DAT, the minimums the maximums----- everything. I especially like the "how much do each specialists make" section and whether or not your boards/gpa/rank make you a candidate for a specialty. I put my numbers in the formula for Ortho and it told me I'd have to add both my board scores to be competitive. 😱 Thanks so much and all pre-dents and dents a like please visit this website before posting a question.

Once again thank you! Hey is there anyway to contact the web host to see if we can access the page prior to 3 am in the morning-----many times I try and I get the off-line notice. 😕 Oh well it's worth the wait.

Wow, this is the lamest thing I have ever read. There are no rankings, at least not yet. Give the kid a break- how is he supposed to know?

Hey toof.
This is simply not true. Really. I am not in any school yet, but have a BDS from Egypt.
Anyways, I have been working as an expanded function dental assistant for 3 years now in the US, and have seen DMD and DDS's perform surgery alike. No discrimination or preference given to one degree over the other what so ever. Not even for malpractice insurance pourposes.

"Origins of DMD Degree

Originally, there was only the DDS degree, which stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. This changed in 1867 when Harvard University added its dental school. Harvard University only grants degrees in Latin and the Latin translation of "DDS" was "Chirurgae Dentium Doctoris" - or CDD. When the people at Harvard thought CDD was too cumbersome, a Latin scholar was consulted and suggested "Medicinae Doctor" be prefixed with "Dentariae." This is how the DMD, or "Dentariae Medicinae Doctor" degree, was started.

Numerous schools have since copied this notation, and in 1989, 23 of the 66 North American dental schools awarded the D.M.D. There is no difference between the DMD and DDS degree; all dentists must meet the same National & Regional certification standards. However, a 1999 study from Case Western Reserve University found that there is a high level of confusion about the two degrees amongst the general public. They found that fewer than 20% of the 524 interviewed lay persons knew that a DDS and DMD received the same level of training. Of those who indicated there was a difference in training, 69% felt that DMDs had more training than DDSs.[3]"

But, I'm not sure if it actually displays rankings of various schools. If the server is busy, it will still show the content (at may be slower rate). So, server being up at late nights sounds a lil strange to me.

There are no official dental school rankings. Period. The ADA does not endorse them and they refuse to give out information to US News and World Report and the above link is intended on being a prank on an unsuspecting pre-dent.

In regards to the above website actually being registered, that doesn't surprise me one bit. Dr. Aly Kanini is a dentist that peddles his product, an 'Ultimate Admissions Guide to Dental School' - basically it's information you can easily glean from your advisors office and SDN. He has a couple of sites registered to him and in the past he has posed as a student promoting his product on this site. 🙄

Actually, I have two computers at home – PC and MAC. I tried all day and couldn’t connect with PC. However, with MAC I connected right a way. Plus all ranking info looks much better on the MAC’s screen – HIGH-RESOLUTION!!! I could clearly see each school.

Use MAC and connect any time….. 👍

I think this is a good reason to buy an iBook if you don't have one.

Wow. This thread is incredible...

I tell myself it's a joke, it's not real over and over and over...

But some part of me wants to stay up until 4 am (at least set my alarm) and see for myself.

Props to everyone that is kinda making me lose my mind!

A DDS is to a DMD like an MD is to a DO.

Whats wrong with that definition? I cant believe Im stuck with a DMD...oh well, I still get to do some dental procedures at least.

This joke is so old it's ******ed. You guys are like kids laughing at the word "poop."
However, if there is a difference its gotta be "DDS is to DO, as DMD is to MD," hands down. So, suck it!! :meanie:

Public perception of DDS versus DMD degrees.
Lalumandier JA, Pyle MA, Sawyer DR.

Department of Community Dentistry, Case Western Reserve University, School of Dentistry, Cleveland, Ohio 44106-4905, USA. [email protected]

There are currently two degrees awarded to dental graduates from U.S. dental schools. The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the level of confusion among lay personnel concerning these degrees and (2) to identify and explore any basis for any public opinion. Five hundred and twenty-four lay persons were interviewed in Cleveland and the surrounding area. Chi-square analyses were employed to determine the effects of gender, frequency of dental visits, types of dental insurance, education level, age, income, and race on public perception of the DDS and DMD degrees. Fewer than 20% of those interviewed knew that a DDS and DMD received the same level of training. Of those who indicated there was a difference in training, 69% felt that DMDs had more training than DDSs. Since the majority of lay persons were confused about the two degrees, the establishment of one unified dental degree may contribute to a better public understanding of the education and capabilities of dentists.

CONCLUSION: DMDs own DDSers.

When you do that, make sure you find an English dictionary too.

Every dent was once a pre-dent and had this question or a similar question on mind unless the individual doesn't care where to go. No need to make fun of people this way. 👎

Dang, As you can see, I had my hopes set pretty high on that DDS but I decided to go to Nova and settle for the DMD. 😕 I actually heard that ADEA is going to change it from DMD to dmd. I guess the capital letters kind of resemble the capital letters DDS and it is throwing some of the general public off. Kind of sucks but oh well, I think dmds will be in just as much demand as DDSers because everyone needs cleanings and stuff.

i hope the DO is to MD as DDS is to DMD is part of the joke.. cuz thats definitely not true

I second that. DDS can do extractions, fillings, root canals while DMD can only talk to patient about the procedures. You see DDS are like "doers" and DMDs are "preachers". DP
