So my school is kind of weird in the sense that we have a trimester schedule (3 terms of 10 weeks). Usually our normal sized classes (other than labs or pe's or special classes) are "9 units" which are divided among Lecture hours, lab hours, and homework hours. So for example Ch1b this term is 3 hours of lecture and 6 of homework for a total of 9 hours a week or 9 units. My question is how does this compare to the normal system of credits that dental schools use for requirements.

Here are some examples of dental requirements:
Uf
Physical Sciences

Required courses:
  • General, inorganic chemistry – 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours)
  • Organic chemistry – 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours)
  • Physics – 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours)
Biomedical Sciences

Required courses:
  • Biology – 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours)
  • Biochemistry – 4 semester hours (6 quarter hours)
  • Microbiology – 4 semester hours (6 quarter hours)
  • Molecular Biology or a genetics course emphasizing molecular biology – 4 semester hours (6 quarter hours)
Columbia:
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree are preferred. A minimum of 90 credits at an accredited American institution or its equivalent (Preferred minimum is 120 credits).
  • 6 credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, of coursework in English composition or literature.
  • A minimum of 8 credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, in the following subject areas (including lab):
    o Physics
    o Biology
    o Inorganic or general chemistry
    o Organic chemistry
** What exactly is one year of study? I mean in highschool I had a block scheduled academics which meant say 4 classes first term and 4 new classes the other term rather than 8 classes year round. Does that mean in the case of my highschool I'd have to take 2 semesters of block schedule classes in a subject to fulfill the one year requirement? How does this apply to Caltech's term system? Say for example if we offer Organic Chemistry a b and c for the three different terms which is 9 units (3 lecture 6 hw)- would I have to take all of them?

None of the above probably makes sense since I am very tired, but I guess my question is - what is a semester hour and a quarter hour equal at Caltech?

i had a similar question because MIT uses a units system also with 12 units per 'normal' class (4 lecture, 8 hw) but in semesters. i was able to find the information online at our registrar's website, but if you can't find it online, you may want to call the registrar directly. they probably get this question more than you think. for us, 3 units=1 semester hour or credit, so each class is 4 credits--which matches up with schools that use the more standard credit system.... i think.

Anyone else?

On the Columbia site they say that 8 credits is a year's worth of coursework. Does that apply to UCLA credits as well? So I could take 2 classes of orgo on their quarter system and that would total to 8 credits- a year's worth of study right? (I'm confused b/c UCLA is on quarters and that means a semester's worth of work as opposed to a year)
