Hello,

I am in first year DDS and I am thinking of transferring to another school because of personal reasons. I was wondering if this would have any negative affect on my application to competitive post-graduate programs ie. OMFS and Ortho. I just want to add that I rank top 10% and the school I am transferring to is more "known" than my previous school.

Thanks so much!!

who cares about "known".... does not matter. you're a first year worry about getting through and drinking shine.....

haha thanks TJNova2011... i am getting through and drank quite a bit, but not any of those moonshine!

anyway, my concern was more with whether transferring to a different school due to personal reasons, during the four years would have any negative impact on my application. For instance, would the program director of a school see that I transferred during undergrad DDS and not look at it favourably?

You will be asked about it, but if it is a legitimate reason, what can do you? Honestly, do not sweat the small stuff, move forward and keep kicking ass

No, it won't matter. What will matter: your NBME or GRE score. Other then that, just be a normal person.

Why do people on SDN put so much weight on the GRE?! Schools don't care about it! Talked to several people who interviewed at multiple schools for ortho and all said that no one cares. Side note, but figured I'd chime in!

No, it won't matter. I have two colleagues from dental school who transferred to other dental schools right after freshman year. They excelled beyond what they did at the first dental school they attended with me. I read about them now, and it was more than 15 years ago. They were both in the top 10% of our class, moved on to bigger schools and did so well. They both specialized and even had top positions at dental schools as practitioners and faculty of two very well known dental schools that are ranked very high. You will probably be asked, but it will have no bearing. Life is not constant and change always comes about. I was out of dental school for 2 years due to personal and financial setbacks, returned and finished, and I've been asked about it during interviews over the years. What you receive in the end and what you accomplish has nothing to do with what happened along the way. What's important is that you finished and earned your just credentials. Best wishes and don't sweat the small stuff.
