I was talking to my adviser today and I was told that three new dental schools would be opening up for the next cycle. He did not know which schools exactly and also said he wasn't 100% sure that they would all be opening next year. Does anyone have any information about if this is true and what schools? Thanks

I believe the new dental school here at East Carolina in NC should be accepting applications this next cycle but it is only for instate residents.

MWU is opening a dental school at their downer's grove, il location Fall 2011. A friend of the family is on the board...or something like that.

The University of Utah will be opening a dental school in 2011.

i heard somewhere something about yale opening up a dschool too.

Theres been talk about opening one in Northern Wisconsin. It would be kinda like ASDOH, small class size and really trying to get people to work in underserved areas. Here's an article from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

So now Utah will potentially have 2 dental schools? It appears that Southern Nevada will be private, but what about U of U?

Wow, they finally got the ball rolling. Good for them and future NC applicants. Is it just hear-say that they will only take in-state students for the first several years, because it doesn't state that anywhere on the website?

Not hearsay...my brother worked at the GPR clinic there after graduation, and I currently attend ECU. The dean was saying how that school was to service underserved areas in NC. Their third and fourth year "clinic" experience will be outsourced all over rural NC. Not quite sure how that is going to work, but should be interesting.

Oh, cool. Thanks for the information

The U is a state school. My brother wanted to know if I would stick around another year and go to one of these two so that I wouldn't have to move (I'm currently living in Salt Lake)... but there's no way. I've been looking forward to getting out of here for a long time now. Anyone interested in buying a house, PM me 🙂.

Last I heard, the University of Utah is NOT opening a dental school. Ever. They got a $30 mil donation to do it, but they still won't because they can't get any state funding to back it. The College of Southern Nevada is going to be taking apps next summer for their dental school in Utah though, last I read at least.

University of Utah is not guaranteed either way. They have the money in the bank for the building and operating costs, but need the state to commit 2mil/year to go through with it. Currently it is in the legislature right now, so hopefully we'll know soon. With statewide budget cuts it looks rather grim for 2011, but we can keep our fingers crossed.

as hajibandeh pointed out, we(in Utah) are definitely overpopulated with dentists, but an in state school does not necessarily mean more dentists, it just means the dentists will have less debt. Colorado did a study on the effect of their dental school, and it showed that once their school was operating, there was no net gain of dentists entering the profession in CO. Hopefully that will be the same in Utah

I doubt there will be more dentists in the state by opening two dental schools here. A lot of Utahans go into dentistry, but they have to go elsewhere for their education, and then return to Utah. Dental schools will only change where these dentists go to school. If they DO manage to open two schools, it will be a HUGE blessing to a lot of pre-dents on the west coast. No more Utahans stealing their spots, lol.

Do you think John Hopkins University will ever open a Dental School? If they do, do you think their D school would be great as the Med school? (Sorry to take over the thread) TIA

Does that mean Downer's Grove will begin accepting applications this next cycle for matriculation in the fall of 2011?

I believe they will first take applications in the 2011 cycle, or so I read online.

I think so. I was reading the 2010 DAT Guide and it listed Midwestern in Illinois under SIU and UIC so I'm assuming if you can send the scores, then they're starting to accept apps?

That's awesome. How many seats do they have open? Will they accept a lot of out of staters? I don't know much about their program, so if there is a link someone could throw my way I'd really appreciate it.

So, Midwestern in Illinois will be run in a very similar manner to MWU in AZ. Expect the same level of quality and technology in sim labs, etc. They don't take short cuts that's for sure.

Yes, they will take many OOS. Again, just like in arizona. It's a private school and Illinois will probably hold a good percentage of the seats (maybe 30-40%?).

Soooo frustrating. I'm going to MWU in AZ starting in August but my parents live 40 miles from the school in Illinois. No, I wouldn't live at home but it'd be awesome to be so close!!! It'd be sooo stupid to wait another cycle (my mom wants me closer) haha. NO WAY.

I will be interested in seeing the entering class statistics for the University of Southern Nevada. I imagine that a lot of Utah applicants will want to stay close to home plus having BYU as the biggest feeder school. If the University of Utah opens up a school with cheap instate tuition, now that would top the charts.
