Im a first year Dental student and was wondering if there are any tips on seeing where the “flash” is and removing it.for example the excess composite around the preparation
Thanks

If you blow the tooth completely dry with the air syringe, you can see where the composite ends (texture of composite vs tooth will look different). Next, run your explorer over the tooth, if you feel a bump, it’s flash. Polish that spot until there is a smooth transition between the tooth and composite to get rid of flash.

If it's in a non-esthetic zone, use a composite that doesn't blend in so well. Tactile sensation via explorer along where your prep ends. If you're looking to polish on ivorine teeth, you need to use a very soft composite that abrades very easily (even less than ivorine) so you don't grind so much of it down. If on natural teeth, find an abrasive that adjusts composite but not enamel. You have to develop the skill and tactile sensation of natural tooth structure and composite. Once you have that down, you don't even have to see it directly. For interproximals, floss and pigtail explorer will help you with flash. You can use a scalpel and a flame bur (be careful, if you tilt the bur incorrectly, you will gouge the restoration) for the interproximals.

I think what's even more important is having good matrix technique and isolation to make sure you have minimal flash, reducing the need for adjustments.

Main points:
- develop the feel and tactile sensation of adjusting composite v. natural tooth (that way, you don't even have to see it, but know how to feel for it)
- develop good isolation/matrix technique so that you don't have much issues with flash

Thanks so much!also what can I do to get minimum?should a small a smaller amount of adhesive on the margins?can it be from that
