Hey folks!

First off this is my first post. I've been trolling these forums for the last 5 months though in preparation to take prereqs for my second year of undergrad university (I go to McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario).

Basically the field I want to go into is dental surgery. Currently my choice of dental schools is between the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Basically what I wanted to ask was is the school path for dental surgery the same as regular dentistry? Or do I have to write the MCAT? It's all so confusing 🙁

Thanks!

Not that I'm in any way saying this counts as valid research, but...the only one I found online was for one that took applicants who already had MDs. Guess you'll have to go through d-school and get into a residency like everyone else. (What a shame, though; I kinda wondered about it, too.)

haha trolling lol

I just shadowed an oral surgeon last week (who got her education in the US), and I got to talk to 2 dental students who wanted to pursue this specialty. I was told that you go to dental school just like everyone else, then apply at the end of third year. Oral maxillofacial surgery programs are extremely competitive, as each program takes only a handful students. There are 4 year programs and there are also 6 year programs (where you can get an MD as well), though most oral surgeons are DMD/MD's.

So I guess the only things to do to prepare to pursue oral surgery is to get really good grades during dental school and shadow lots of these surgeons.

Wow thanks for that info Lane! Reading this site is showing me everyday just how much I don't know.
