So with all these crazy things that have happened in Boston I was wondering, are dentists trained to provide some kind of medical help or treat wounds (aside from the mouth) or other conditions that may arise from accidents or emergency situations where medical personnel is limited?

I would actually love to know the answer to that question. If anyone could provide an answer that would be great!!

It varies by state, but in most dentists are classified as first responders, much like nurses & physicians. there's an obvious scope of practice here, but in emergencies, there's training to fall back on.

Beyond basic first aid/ CPR certification, I do not think dentists usually have any of that training. I think dentists in the military get some since they help with triage.

But you can always opt to get emt/other training on your own.

Most MD's don't have the training to deal with trauma either. You can do a surgical critical care fellowship after OMS though.

CPR is the only training we have recieved that is outside of dentistry.

Is EMT training long?

Varies by type, in NY EMT-Basic is like a semester long class while EMT-Paramedic takes a few years with I think 2 being devoted to school and some more devoted to working while you go up in the classifications.
