Dental x-rays linked to common brain tumor

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I came across this interesting article: http://health.yahoo.net/news/s/nm/dental-x-rays-linked-to-common-brain-tumor. What are your thoughts regarding the claim that certain kinds of dental X-rays can increase the risk for meningioma, a most commonly diagnosed brain tumor in the U.S.?

Any kind of self-reporting as a predictor on an outcome variable is pretty much useless in my opinion. I also especially liked how they encourage patients to ask their dentist why they are having the image taken and the benefit to them. Give me a break.

👍 You could draw the same conclusion about a similar study of colon cancer and the correlation between eating cheeseburgers. "Patients who had a diagnosis of colon cancer rate that they thought they ate more cheeseburgers than patients who did not have colon cancer."

It's a self-report that carries little/no validity. Typical media overexposure of a per-conceived feeling regarding dental radiation exposure that is founded on hysteria.

It's ridiculous how damaging such reports are to the dental profession. I also found it horrendous how the president of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is willing to belittle his colleagues (dentists) by encouraging patients to ask why their x-rays have to be taken. Obviously, too much of something is never good, and such articles most at times do us no good when founded on hysteria.

New equipment is basically harmless to the patient. The study even states this, saying the research is based off of old equipment and methods. We (assistants, dentists, hygienists) only stay out of the room because we take 5-10 x-rays a day. Let's also not overlook the research bias, which is ridiculous and should negate this study as a whole. Overall it's a poorly done study and will sadly scare people of the dentist even more, that is, if it gets out in the open.

And I know you are just being sarcastic, but what patients and people don't realize is, the new x-ray technology in Dentistry is really not that harmful
