My dental hygienist told me today that there will soon be a shortage of dentists in the US due to baby boomers retiring...is this true? If so, would dental schools and boards accept and graduate more dentists?
IcemanDDS said:Yes there will be a shortage in the coming years. But this doesnt mean that schools can or will accept more students. Just because there will be a shortage doesnt change the capacities of dental classes.

ItsGavinC said:Not true. There IS a shortage (not "will soon be a shortage").

Comet208 said:Currently on the national level there is a shortage for all types of medical personell: medical, dental, pharmacist, nurses, dental hygienists, pharm techs etc. Last month American Medical Association issued a letter to med schools asking them to increase their class size by about some percentage. I cant remember the percentage, but it would translate to about 2000-3000 more graduating MD's per year so in 30 years it would balance out. They should really do the same for Dental schools.
