Lifestyle is important to me in my career choice . Do you have work life balance , or do you take work home with you? How much free time do you have ?

As a multi-practice owner, I practice 4 days a week and definitely take work home, but it’s 80% non-clinical. Also consult predoc and practice management and lecture (5-10 hrs a week). Still enjoy weekends and take about 6 weeks off.

What kind of lifestyle are you talking about? Lifestyle that needs time or money? I work 33 hours/week, 4.5 days, I rarely take work home and I usually take a week off every now and then. I work weekends, take Mon/Tues off. For me, I'm a solo practice owner, and the downside is that it's hard to take long breaks away from your office. People ask why don't I hire an associate? Cost and not enough work for me and an associate. I value money more than time at this point in life.

I work:

M and T: 9-4
W and Th: 9-6
Fri: Off
Sat: Teach 10-4 (for 2 months and take 3rd month off)
Sun: Off

I don’t take work home. I procrastinate a lot... look for more business opportunities, read and watch current events stories (mostly business, markets and politics), watch a lot of European leagues soccer, Netflix shows, read 1 new book a week, etc. I’m shooting for more quiet life in the future, something I always wanted to have - helps me focus better and appreciate life.

as a new graduate i work 6 days a week 9-6. on my free time i read about cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, molar rct, and anything else that will incerase my production. additionally i read about practice management and real estate. no work-life balance at this point in the career.

What are you raking in on 6 days? How are you taking care of your body?

average for a new graduate.

I get enough cardio running between operatories, raise my heart rate and sweat a little during some surgeries, forearm training during crown preps and extractions. i do squats when i have to wait, like during pvs impressions.

Why.....

8-5 monday-thursday
8-12- friday (closed usually catching up on paper work and business activities or emergency cases)

part of owning a practice is running it. There is never a 40 hour work week.

There’re no offices open on Sundays in my area for me to work at. Otherwise I’d probably be doing 7s.

Just out of curiosity what is your debt load like?

And also do you work as an associate currently? Looking to buy a practice?

:clap:We need more people like you... people willing to work hard to make money. I wish I was as hard working as you, but my hands hurt as I type this.

Also what is your teaching job? Do you get paid well for your dentistry hours?

I'm in my office 35-40 hours a week. I have partners that are there too when I'm not there. I never bring my work home.

About 8:45-2:30 or 3. Exceedingly rare to still be at the office past 3:30. I take off every Wednesday and take off 1 week every month. Life is good. When I'm totally debt free (in about 4 more years) I will start transitioning to 3 day work weeks (maybe take off Mondays and Wednesdays). Plan to be out of the mouth hole altogether in 10 years.

Pretty impressive. Couple questions! Are you a General dentist? Are you a one office solo owner? What’s the plan to be out of the mouth hole? Real estate, mutual fund, etc? Thanks!

Not sure how old you are, but most dentists who practice like your hours are around age 50 and above. So if you are throwing the towel in 10 years, that should put you close to around 60. That’s still a very long career - assuming you were looking at mouths for about 30 years by the time you retire.

I left work today 3:30p as well... I started 9:30a. I think if anyone works “really hard” in their 20s and 30’s, and own your own practice, you can easily work 3-4 days a week and still make a good income ($300k / yr minimum) as a general dentist, or a specialist.

He posted an ama a while back

It should answer some questions

Hi, I'm an oral surgeon, solo practitioner. Just mutual funds and ETFs spread across a 401K, roth IRA, HSA and a brokerage account. I also own my office building which I will sell at the end. Someone posted a link to an AMA I started a while back.

Cheers,
Iggy

M-F 8-5 working in public health. Don't take any work or stress home with me.
I am interested in public health. I grew up low income and my parents suffered a lot of dental difficulties. I would like to give back through public work. How do you like the public sector? You work about 45 hours per week, is that personal preference or because you have to? How is your pay in comparison to private practice?

M - F; 7am-6pm. 1 hr lunch. Associate.

40 hours (1 hr lunch each day). The other two dentists i work with both work 4 days a week, and I was offered that as well but right now (no kids) I just want to work as much and make as much as I can while I can. My pay is significantly higher than an most fqhcs because the one I am at pays off production which isn't common in public health. But typically, especially in the midwest, you can expect to make around $150k with a good benefits package (which most private offices aren't able to offer).

Whats your total compensation from 150k including benefits, and what are your benefits? If that is significantly higher than other public health then how much do they make? Money is not super important to me however I think that dentists should make at least 140k working 36-40 hours to justify the hefty investment of dental school

$150k is average for public health. Im making about $225k right now based of 31% adjusted production. My benefits included medical, dental, vision insurance (portion of which is paid by employer), FSA/HSA offered, 401k, 403b, vacation and CE PTO, CE reimbursement, they also offered relocation reimbursement and paid for my DEA.

That sounds really good. So is it 150 base and then you get to 225 on top of it or is it 150 what you are paid and then 225 including all your benefits? Thank you so much for answering by the way, this seems like a really nice job!

The $150k has nothing to do with where I'm at, thats just the general/average salary for a new grad at FQHCs in the midwest. My salary is 31% production from the previous year

That is a really long schedule, why do you work that much? How much do you make on that?

That's just a full time job. I make average for an associate. However, @pubhealthdent working in public health makes more than me. That sound like a great job to me.

The pay is nice. But dealing with medicaid patients everyday can be exhausting. Its definitely not for everyone

That are some rough hours.

For sure. Medicaid patients are some of the most difficult. I had to pay my dues by working on them during the first year.

An insight I've gained during the whole virus ordeal was that more hours does not mean more money. We cut our operating hours to 30/week and still making more than when we were open 33 hours/week. Of course, it is more intense, but I think the more we condition ourselves to operate efficiently, the more we can accomplish per hour.
