Is deployment certain if you do the Army HPSP? Can you get through it without being deployed, and if so how rarely does this occur?

How many deployments do army dentists typically serve during their payback?

Is there a certain amount of time after a deployment that the Army must wait before deploying you somewhere else? Or can you come back from a deployment and three days later be sent out on another deployment? Similarly, say you have 1 month left of payback. Can the Army send you out on a 6 month deployment during that last month, effectively extending your payback time?

I don't think anyone could answer the question definitively: "Is deployment certain if you do the Army HPSP?" Regardless of various procedural situations in the Army, it's just safe to assume that you will be deployed at some point during your Army career, not the other way around. HPSP is great and the Army, being an officer, would provide you with lots of benefits and privileges to serve, certainly including deployment. IMHO, the first reason for joining the military, regardless of branch, should be to serve the country, financial reasons being the second.

If you do not want to deploy, do not join any service!! This is not a lottery where you try to see if you can get your education paid for but not have to do anything that you don't want to do. If you are joining and then going to do anything you can not to deploy, you do not deserve the scholarship!!

Dentists in the Army typically deploy one time if they do. There are some who have deployed more than once, and most of them have asked to.

Any dentist that deploys more than once will usually have years between deployments. The Army will not deploy you if you have less time available than the deployment that they want to send you on.

Deployments depend on the conflicts around the world. If there are no conflicts, or if the war is drawing down, than there will be less people that deploy. If we begin fighting many different conflicts or one major one, more dentists will deploy.

Thank you.

Nowhere did I indicate that I do not want to deploy. Don't assume that because I am inquiring about how it works that I do not want to do it.

While that may not be your intent, the fact is that many of the people who ask that question have that in mind. See the thread below about not wanting to move away from home.

Is it safe to assume that if I wanted to make a career out of military dentistry it is adventageous to deploy more often? How can I make myself most likely to get deployments, do advanced training of some type?

If you want to deploy you can volunteer, that is your best chance. Even then you may not always go. Deployments do look good on your resume, but you can be succesfull within the Army Dental Corps without having deployed.

Doing a 1 yr or 2 yr AEGD will provide you with the best chance of deploying since that skill set is best suited for the environment. However general dentists having done a 1 yr AEGD or not having done one are the dental officers that deploy in the greatest numbers.
