Do you speak fluently? Having taken classes in school doesn't count. Did you clearly indicate so on your app?

Try applying to more than 3 dental schools.

I lived in Panama for two years, learned it there, and use it in my job now. While it's not as great now as it was then, I would still consider myself fluent and indicated it as clearly on my app as I could. I know I only applied to 3 schools and my GPA sucks.

Regardless, I posted that just to imply that schools are different and it's really hard to generalize what schools want without painting with a broad brush. We DO know that ALL schools want to see as good of a GPA and DAT score as possible. That's merely an opinion based on my limited experience and knowledge.

Something else is going on here. Your GPA's just fine, above many schools' average. Your DAT's very high. Going off numbers alone, you should be accepted, so you are not a good example for anything. Either there's a negative somewhere, or you're not going a good job of highlighting your strengths.

Let's not forget what Doc Toothache mentioned. Dental assisting requires no skills whatsoever. To get the job, you need no experience, no schooling, and practically speaking no real talent. He's absolutely right.

Here in Florida, you need to go to school and be certified to be a dental assistant. It is a 1 year course.

But if I had the opportunity to consider someone with an 18AA (who speaks Spanish fluently but has no dental experience) with someone with a 22A (who only speaks English and has dental experience), I consider taking the 18AA. I chose my wording carefully here. I didn't say I'd do it. There's power in the ability to treat patients most your colleagues can't.

Yes, you would "consider" them, but of course you "consider" every applicant during the admissions process. This is clearly a terrible example and I hope you never do become an adcom.

The only way this scenario would ever make sense is if both candiates had the same DAT scores.

The point of admissions is to see if you can HANDLE the workload of dental school and graduate as a competent dentist.

The fact that the person may be able to speak to more people if they even make it out of dental school should not overshadow low DAT scores, especially when, in your example, they are being compared to someone with much higher DAT scores.

This isn't Florida. Those programs accept anybody that applies, hardly an indicator of capability.

There's nothing clear about this. It's only clear to you because you have tunnel vision. People with a 17AA have graduated from Harvard every single year. In fact, nearly every school has a student with a 17AA, even those with a 22-24.4 average AA. A select few schools go as low as a 13AA. Those students graduate too.

The basis of affirmative action is to accept those who are most likely to return to the underserved communities, despite their lower admissions scores. All schools are emphatically encouraged by the ADA to accept more students who fall into this category. A Spanish-speaking white person who've demonstrated a history of dedication to the hispanic community suggests to me that he may continue to do so in the future. Perhaps even start a clinic there. A Spanish-speaking white person who hasn't demonstrated such dedication probably won't return to the hispanic community and should be considered without special considerations.

When we conduct interviews, there's a list of information we try to get out of the students. Certain information about who they are and about their past that we try to collect. We accept those students that have these certain qualities. I've looked through your predents. The reason why you hanv't been accepted to a single school is because you have no clue what they're looking for. You focus so much emphasis on your numbers that you're totally oblivious to what truly looking for, and it's hurting you.

Looking at the minority numbers, the "emphatic encouragement by the ADA" doesn't appear to have percolated down.

I'm using "we" in the same sense as "you familiar." I think that's what it's called. When you're talking to a particular person, say "you," but don't mean that particular person you're talking to.

It's the schools' decision who they accept. It's "encouragement," not "coercion." If they're really into white folks like Marquette and Midwestern, then so be it.

The English lesson was a nice touch. What's next? Salsa dancing? (Check for punctuation.)Also, nice of you to clarify the role of the ADA.

Because I have no clue what tha hell you're referencing. You made some obscure ass references and expect people to read your mind. I clarified what I was doing, because it didn't seem apparent that you knew what I was doing. I can teach you salsa dancing, but I'd rather you improve your writing.

You alternate between giving out wisdom and being an old fool.

Vs no wisdom and a young fool.

What're you going to say next? "...your mama!" ?!?!!?

I'm going to give you an English lesson again, because you could use it. When you highlight a quotation in bold (my ADA reference) without saying anything at all about it, your readers don't know what you mean by it. It's common practice to explain what you mean, not to assume your readers are telepathic. You should have learned this in elementary school. No, wait...what am I saying? You can only quote in bold on a PC, and you didn't have PC's back then. There isn't a bold function on the typewriter...or is it a stone tablet and chisel? My fault Grandpa. I shoulda been more sensitive.

Let me be very clear. It's none of your business, but I have been accepted to dental schools.

Don't think that you can stalk down my predents profile and use what you see there as a basis for a personal attack.

You don't know me and it is very unbecoming of someone who is supposedly a professional. Although from your more recent posts it seems like you are anything but a professional.

I won't be sinking to your level. I am done having any type of conversation with you.

Oh man, I went out of town for a few days and missed all the action

(rasping the gavel several times...) ORDER IN THIS THREAD!!!! ....Seriously guys?

For part 1: Not in your lifetime. For part 2: Looks like you picked up a few pointers from the Online course in "How to Deal with Geriatric Patients".

Not sure how it's stalking to click on the predents profile that you have linked to your SDN account. Wow.

Getting back to where this started, when you get out of dental school, your DAT score and undergrad GPA is not going to matter as much as your competency and ability to communicate with your patients.
