Hey guys, need some help.

What is the relationship between depression and growth hormone?

According to the research literature I'm reading, GH is decreased in depressed patients (www.pubmed.com). But isn't GH stimulated by psychological stress? What gives?

Maybe GH is inhibited in response to extended stress... dunno

you've prolly already looked at these...

Actually, both links you posted suggest a decrease in GH as well in depressed patients.

Though I'm interested in why. Why is GH being decreased in response to this particular form of psychological stress?

It also seems to have connections with Serotonin, CRH and TRH. All in some crazy sexy idea that would make my head explode if I even began to understand what I was thinking about.

...and don't forget the GH-IGF axis

Can you explain that? IGF are the growth factors derived activated by the GH..

Upon more reading and bloodshot eyes.. I think the main thing is the CRH which somewhere down the line releases somatostatin which inhibits TRH and GH. And serotonin likewise normally inhibits TRH which creates a blunted response of TSH to TRH when serotonin is depleted. 😱

I know the stress hormone cortisol limits growth hormone levels (production and secretion). That's why you shouldn't do heavy weight training for more than about 75 minutes at a shot...your recovery will be slower and your growth will be less...

Serotonin stimulates the production of growth hormone, so low levels of serotonin = hindered production of growth hormone...from my understanding. I remember reading a rat experiment.

Cortisol is released by psychological stress, hence stimulation of the adrenal glands. I know there is a connection between ^Cortisol----> vGH, so that might be the connection. Also, doesn't an increase in TSH has a mirror effect in Cortisol stimulation and a then a decrease in GH?

OP: Do you think you might be deficient in GH? Or why the ? Just wondering....

Haha, I learned that stuff in my MCAT prep course.

I always think of the principle: if you are increasing blood sugar release (depleting glycogen stores), you can not store blood sugar (glycogen). For instance, fasting state and well-fed state can not occur at the same time. GH reduces blood glucose levels, while increasing glycogen storage; cortisol decreases glycogen storages, while increasing blood glucose. Inversely proportional.

Sound logic?
