how were questions pertaining to Derm.

were they mostly part of a group of signs/symptoms or do we have to know the details differentiating Pemphigus vulgaris vs. Bullous pemphigoid, etc.?

i don't remember having ANY lectures on this subject in ANY of my classes - though i missed many lectures. so the stuff in RR path looks like Greek to me - other than the Microbio correlations

of course you need to know the differences between bullous pemphigus and pemphigus vulgaris. It's just one small disease entity within one part(derm) of one unit(MS-connective), but on the chance they happen to ask a question on it you'll most likely have to to know:

1) what Immunoflourescence will show in terms of IgG antibody distribution(one linear, one throughout the epidermis) and why those patterns are present
2) which one is more serious and involves the mucosa as well
3) gross pictures of the two(one has blisters that stay as blisters, in the other the blisters typically rupture)

I didn't have much derm but it was more about knowing pathological mechanisms and histologic features than "groups of signs/symptoms." Being able to recognize major conditions with very characteristic features grossly was also important.

Yeah not much derm on step 1, i think I had like 1 or at most 2 questions on step 1 about derm. But step 2 there was at least on one or two on each block.

there may not be a lot of pure derm on anyone's test, but knowing some of the derm associations are key.....I mean if the question describes kopliks spots or the rash in lyme disease and then asked you about the organism that causes it, it's more a micro than a derm question but knowing the derm image or description sent you towards the right answer.
