Can be very variable depending on the hospital,some places are intense especially when there are large inpatient services. But fairly regular working hours 8-6 or so.Work is divided between clinics(mostly) and in-patient consults,surgery,path electives.On call/weekend call exists but minimal. .Its an academic specialty so research is generally a must..time is alloted for reading and a very high knowledge base of basic sciences is expected.Overall the workload is less than in many other direct patient contact specialties.
