7 Derm spots open in this years SOAP, and at good programs too. Any Derm applicants want to shed light on this rather unlikely occurrence?

Probably something similar that happened at Michigan's peds program a couple years ago--the same programs were vying for the same applicants, and a program (or several) failed to rank as many applicants as they should've.

There were 6 open spots in Derm last year. So I'd call this year "normal".

It is so competitive they rather not match than take a lesser student.

I'm sure it's not for the lack of interest. Very similar story to PM&R that failed to match last year and this year for the first time in 3-4 years.

The PDs simply made a mistake in not ranking enough applicants. They were overconfident that they would fill. Much like how certain students don't rank enough programs...and they fail to match.

It's also a work:benefit issue. I'm sure that if each derm program ranks 40 people for each spot they are trying to fill, they will have no problem. But interviewing 40:1 is a huge pain, and expensive. So you interview a lower ratio -- less work, but more chance of ending up in SOAP. And guess what? If you end up as one of the 7 derm programs in SOAP, I expect you get lots of applications from people who didn't match into derm, you fill your spots, and life goes on. It's like finding out you have a cavity when you go to the dentist -- it's a pain, takes time out of your life, and is annoying. But you deal with it, and your life goes on just fine.

A couple years back there were 7 spots.

Four were new spots that were in the match for the first time (likely added late in year after interview season)

Two were actually a mistake somehow.

So there was technically just one truly unfilled spot from normal interview season.

Who got it?

Reason my PD said the spot was left? Didn't interview/rank enough from the correct geographical location(s).
