What percentage of dermatologist residents had to do a research year (or take off multiple years to do research)? Is there a way to decipher this information from the match stats or any other data out there?

That number is above 50 percent.
Dont think that includes dual program applicants like md phds either which prob raises that average.
Certain cities it is practically required to have a research yr like nyc.
When applying from certain medical schools schools it is essentially required (but no one forces you and these ppl still can match). E.g. are penn and tufts.
You can still match without a research year. Consult your department mentors.
