dermatology?

I don't know much 'bout y'all cityfolk, but in the smaller parts 'o the world, we gots hectic call schedules.
When we's only got 2 surgeons in town, each of 'em hasta take call every other days. When there's only one of 'em, he (or she, if the doc's a gal) hasta take call every day. 'course at the hospital, you can always stabalize the poor fella who's sick and fly 'em out by helicopter if all they gots is a PA or one of them nice nurse ladies (or fellers) on duty.
That's the thing 'bout dermatologiests. They only gots a couple of emergency type situations, so if you're being one of them fellers on call, you'll prolly get to sleep just about every night.
'stead of havin' ta sleep in your easy chair every night 'cuz you're the only anethesiologist 'round these parts, and ya ain't never gonna get to sleep, 'cuz you gotta answer the phone on the second ring every night of the week, every week of the year.
A friend 'o mine, he's one of them anethesiology fellers, and he dun said that it ain't even real sleep when yer on call.

It is WAY to early for you to be asking this question. Most of the people at my school who came in thinking about Dermatology is no longer considering it, but not really by their choice. Get to third year and then start thinking about it.

Derm is so competitive that unless you are in the top, top of your class, it woudn't be feasible to go for it, and many people (including me) who wanted to go into derm when they first started school, are no longer considering it. Maybe you are a gunner and wanna go for it, but my friend who is a natural gunner in ugrad and had very good stats coming in to UCLA med, is barely getting the avg or a little better. If you can consistently get top scores throughout the first year, then start considering the pros/cons.

That's quite a disservice you've posted. Just keep trying you best until you find yourself sitting in mid-March unmatched. Or, even better, find out in mid-January when you have had no derm interviews scheduled.
Not everyone can graduate in the top 10% of their med school class, and not everyone can be a dermatologist. (It is pretty hard-to-believe that you have to be the best and brightest to get to be an acne doctor, but no point arguing with reality.)

Plus, no one said that this person should apply to derm alone. Most ppl who apply to derm, apply to other residencies as well, just in case they don't match.

I dont know much about this, but based on my limited knowledge getting top 10% of ur class isnt gonna get u jack for derm. There's 100 positions in the whole US of A. And the the absolute best and brightest students in the nation apply to derm. I think the percentage is most likely top 1%. So unless u are in the top 1% of the nation, have superb credentials and/or ur uncle is the chief of derm at some school, seriously think about other options.
Another thing bout derm, it is NOT the top payin specialty as far as i know, in fact its not even close unless u give botox shots all day. I too agree that its really too bad that the brightest students dont take on more challenging specialties like...well...internal medicine.

You can apply to different types of residencies? Doesn't thaqt look bad if you apply to derm, plastics, and radiology all at the same institution? Do students really do this? The specialties I'm interested in are all considered competative. But I assumed I could only go for one anhd pray. 🙂
