Any suggestions for how one can better prepare himself for getting a derm residency? Derm research? ???

Like in any competitive specialty, you'll need to strive for good pre-clinical grades, a great Step I score, honors in 3rd year rotations, AOA membership, +/- research in the field or related field, connections within the field, and a lot of luck.
