Hey Guys:

I'm new here so please go easy on me.

I actually have a two pronged question.

I recently submitted my ERAS application for a bunch of Anaesthesia programs but have not assigned personal statements to the programs as yet.

The reason why I sort of rushed the application process is because I wanted to get my application thru before my step 2 grades come out. See I did pretty well on Step 1 but feel kinda queasy about my soon to be known score for Step 2 (took it 8/20).

So here are the questions:

How long do I have to put in the personal statement before programs start rejecting my application on the basis of incompleteness?

And, is there any way I can get a mulligan or trash my Step 2 score altogether (or at least keep it from entering my applcation)? - Now I already opted out of the automatic retransmit option on ERAS, but the transcipt they get will still have my Step 2 exam date listed, no?

Any help would be much, much appreciated

There are residency forums here. I would ask in the General Residency forum. Most people here are premeds with the occasional med student like myself. But I'm an MS1 and I doubt many here could answer you.

Take care,

On the ERAS application USMLE section, there's an option box. You can transmit all your step I scores, and then opt to NOT have your step II scores automatically transmitted. If you want a school to have your step II scores, you can designate that after you get the scores back.

However, if you've already submitted your ERAS application, you may have already checked the box? Take a look at your USMLE section on the ERAS app to see.

Good luck...

Hi there,
Most programs do not begin to do the major consideration until the Deans Letters are posted. For many schools, the Deans Letters go out on November 1 so you have some time. Beware though, some places will not consider your application until it is complete so you may have lost some points by not having a complete applications sans Deans Letter.

I interviewed for Anesthesia two years ago. All of the top programs (Mayo Clinic, Hopkins, Harvard) asked for my Step II score. They wanted to know when I had taken the test and if my scores would be back in time for review. (I took Step II in Sept) They encouraged folks to take Step II early because they used that score in the decision-making process.

I also felt very shaky about Step II and was very happy to find that I had scored ten points higher on Step II than on Step I. No matter what the score, unless you failed (highly unlikely), they are going to want your Step II scores anyway. Unless you are a very marginal candidate otherwise, I would report out everything possible and let them rank with as much information as they can get.

If you are a marginal candidate, pick more programs to apply to so that you have plenty of interviews and increase your chances of a match. Anesthesia is not a good bet for scramble.

Thanks for all your advice guys.
