Does anyone know my chances for getting an interview at UCLA? 32R, 3.93 GPA, engineer, 28 yrs old, OOS

I'm driving myself nuts with hope...is it false hope? My file has been complete there since 8/7!!!!

You always have a shot. You have a great GPA, above their average. You have a good MCAT, though below their average.

On the upside, UCLA has in-state preference, but not as strong an anti-OOS bias as most of the UCs. But it's competitive.

Best of luck...

His MCAT is their avg according to the last MSAR

How are your ECs? Numbers are important, but the school really looks for well-rounded applicants.

There actually is no instate preference. The majority of people who apply to UCLA are from CA, so this has a sort of diluting effect on the OOS applicants. An OOS applicant will have a lower chance of being granted an interview, but this is mostly due to the sheer number of CA applicants. At the interview stage, there is no preference.

Really? But according to their stats, they have:

In-State: 3,240 applicants, 551 interviews, 195 acceptances
17% of applicants are interviewed, 35% of interviews are accepted
OOS: 2,175 applicants, 207 interviews, 50 acceptances
10% of applicants are interviewed, 25% of interviews are accepted

This comes to a 6% in-state acceptance rate vs. 2% out-of-state acceptance rate.

What does this mean?

honestly, it may not mean much. what if perhaps more of the CA applicants were more qualified than the out of staters. there is no way of knowing this.

I'd doubt that. UCLA is a state school, so every tom/dick/harry with california residency is going to apply. I don't think you'd have as many unqualified OOSers doing so.

ECs are decent...prior military, 6 yrs work experience as engineer, some research, shadowing, and volunteering over last 2 years.

At what point should I really start to get concerned that I haven't heard anything? Dec? Jan?

did you receive a secondary? they screen those

I have to say man, it's really hard getting an interview from UCLA. I'm OOS myself, complete 8/25 and my stats are way above average. Don't give up hope though, someone from the adcom might really like your application. Did you do UCSD? I think they like nontrads better though. UCLA likes their students very research oriented with great stats.
Good luck and happy turkey-eating 😉

I’m reapplying to UCLA.
I’ve been waitlisted two years ago, and now that I’ve added a Master’s in a related field, I can’t even get an interview.

Go figure… 🙁

I didn't try UCSD, but did apply to UCD, USC, Stanford, and UCLA (submitted my secondaries to all of them a while ago)....already got rejected from UCSF. 🙁 CA is showing me no love!

Yeah I know how you must be feeling. It sucks. I wish Cali was more open minded like Michigan. But oh well. UCSD was specially good because they have a long ass secondary and my father and sister are already in Cali so I got to put that on there. Remember, no news is good news 😉
