Do you guys usually get to know the prof by doing some type of research with him/her ? Then ask for the LOR?

I was thinking to get a LOR from a prof who taught in one of my science classes for one semester. I visited him during the office hour alot, but I personally did not talk anything outside of course materials with him. Do you think he would be a good LOR? Did anyone here actually ask a prof who you only have taken a semester of class with to wrote a LOR? If so, did it feel awakard. I just worried that I may seem desperate asking to write a LOR without talking much outside of course materials.

Thanks!

When you meet him to ask for the letter of recommendation, that's how the professor gets to know you. Bring in a resume with you academic background, motivations, goals etc. and he'll use that to come up with a recommendation if he does not know you personally.
