In the process of selecting my top 3 programs and can't decide on the order. My top 3 are: Beaumont, Henry Ford, and Receiving. During the interview I thought all of them are fairly good programs. I don't have a gut feeling that one feels better than the other. I'm from CA, but only got one interview out there and didn't feel good about it. Not much action from the east programs either. Can any of the residents/attendings comment on any of these programs, and will I have a difficult time practicing outside of the Michigan area once I'm finished with residency.

I feel the Detroit area has been somewhat poorly represented lately...

I am current 3rd year at one of the Detroit programs. All of them will prepare you well for your career and will not prohibit your future job search. I initially applied to and was accepted to a fellowship, but ultimately chose a different path. I have since received job offers from community and academic programs across the country.

The Detroit area in general is actually a great place to live and I have been very happy here. I have never not felt safe, and I spend a ton of time downtown.

It seems to be getting a little late in the game, but feel free to contact any of the residents you met on your interviews. I am sure they will be happy to give you more information.

All I know about Detroit is that this commercial gave me goosebumps tonight.

I grew up in Detroit. Decided to train elsewhere, but interviewed at all the Detroit programs for residency, and interviewed at all of them again for attending jobs. I am currently an attending at Henry Ford, and would be happy to discuss by private message if you want. If there's enough egging on, I could post publicly as well.

I can be very unbiased about the pros/cons of the different programs. About the city of the Detroit though....sorry....will be very biased. I love the area and I think more young professionals should choose it.

As part of my faculty position, I am paid to be biased, so I won't comment too much.

I will say that WBH has a very different patient base, when compared to DRH or HFH.

Might Mouse--any thoughts on Henry Ford's new-ish ultrasound fellowship?

the ultrasound seems to be strong. the residents have an ultrasound month in their curriculum, and they get a lot of time one on one with the fellow.

as far as being a fellow....not sure the criteria used to decide who gets it or how competitive it is. i do know we already have one fellow next year.

the fellow spends a lot of time scanning. our current fellow spends mon-thurs from like 9a-5p in the department doing ultrasounds on patients. i am pretty sure she decided on that schedule herself. in addition, she has direct one on one time with the fellowship director going through scans saves on the computer -- both for education and QA

our department teaches an ultrasound course to the second year med students at wayne state, and the fellow is instrumental in that.

and finally, the fellow works a few shifts in the department -- gets some shifts in which is working in the traditional sueprvisory attending role, and seems to get a fair amount of shifts when the attendings are covering the department during resident conference time.

All 3 have excellent reputations

Thanks so much for that info--it seems like a great place to train--I'll definitely put it on the list when looking next year
