Dick Vet

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really do like the program here, and the extensive opportunities to do research in an amazing facility, but, like you said in another post hopefulvet21, I have traveled alot. I have spent more time in the last 5 years living in either another state or another country and, if I have the chance, I would kind of like to move home. On the other hand when I asked about hands on experience in the early years at Davis the said they had a dog walking program! Hmmm...I've got my own dog to walk, but, thanks anyway. I really don't know what to do!

WildZooVet, I think you would love Edinburgh, but if you want to be close to home I would go for Davis. I would ask yourself if it's more important for you to be close to home, or get lots of hands on experience in the first years. Edinburgh will have you doing plenty with the required EMS work, more than any of the US schools really I would say. Then again, perhaps that's a minor detail that doesn't outweigh the fact that its really far from home for you.
I don't know how old you are, but I'm only 21 so at this point I'm still wanting to get away and see more of the world. Remember though, that you can still go home over breaks and even do clinical EMS at Davis too. There are 5 weeks during your last year when you can go do any externship you want. It's a tough choice for sure!

Wildzoovet, there are many more opportunities for hands-on activity at Davis than just dog walking. Some of the things I can think of from the top of my head are colic team, foal team, calf team, 3-4 feral cat spay/neuter clinics PER month, Mercer clinic every month, Sac city shelter spay/neuter every month, CAPE (companion avian & pet exotic) treatment crew ... these are extracurricular. We also have a clinical skills class years 1-3; year 1 is general handling & physical exams, year 2 has skills like venipuncture, and year 3 has more complicated skills. It also includes nursing sessions in 4 areas (equine, large animal, small animal, and CAPE).

On the other hand, Scotland seems pretty amazing. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you ShelterGirl, that really does sound like a lot of very cool opportunities, and ones that I was not aware of. 🙂

Hello!

I can't seem to find any information about textbooks and supplies that we need to buy when we get there. I'm trying to set up my budget and those numbers would be very helpful.

-

they send that to you after you've handed in a deposit. I'm sure it will be about the same as any other school. I would budget maybe $500/year, give or take. You can always borrow books from upperclassmen and buy them used also.

well, I'd say I'm almost sure. But I also said that about RVC like a week ago so I think it's going to come down to whatever I decide at the last minute lol. Tufts is out, and I think RVC is too expensive for me, but I don't know if I want to leave out Melbourne yet! What is your decision at the moment?

Yikes hopeful, me too! I thought I decided last week that I was definitely not going to RVC, but now I am being pulled back. I don't know what to do! Why can't money grow on trees?!

If I don't get into Davis then I'm definitely going to Edinburgh, but, that's a big if for me and if I do get in....

Well looks like it would be a last minute decision for me too:laugh:

does anyone know how many students are in each vet class, and about how many of them are north americans?

I believe there are about 120 students in each class. Not totally sure how many GEP's, but my guess would be around 20-30 Americans (I think that's how many are in my friend's class).

annaig! There you are! We've been looking for you! lol. I'm coming to Edinburgh!!

YAY!
I was wandering about the Yorkshire Dales and playing for little lambs, then recovering. It was a long, fun adventure.
Good luck and congrats to everyone that's coming over the pond this summer! You should be hearing from your mentors (or you can pester them) soon. = )

I'm so excited to go to be a Dick Vet... I sent in my deposit and everything.. its going to be amazing!

Hey all

I've pretty much been a lurker, but i decided to make an account and all that jazz. I'll be applying for the 2014 cycle, and you can all probably see pretty clearly where I want to go 😀. I'm actually an american undergrad studying abroad in Edinburgh right now, and basically fell in love with the city and really want to be there for fall '10!

Welcome! As you already know, you will find a ton of great information on this forum for your application cycle.

Are you at UofE, or another university? Will you be there in the fall? There are an increasing numbers of us jumping the pond 😀

Glad you decided to officially join us here 😛

Hey thanks for the welcome! I am at UofE right now, and loving every second of it. Although right now i'm going through final exams, so i'm loving only a slight bit less 🙄.

Unfortunately, I won't be there for the fall, as i'll be returning to my home university in the states for my fourth year. I'll definitely be visiting though, since I really don't think I can last a year away from this city! Obviously, I hope to be back in fall '10 though!

ps- After having my first final in the UK earlier today, I now realise why everyone here says they "write" exams. You really do write them...sheesh.

DickVetPlease,
since you're at Edinburgh now, go to the school's open day!! It's in May I think, and is only once a year! This is your chance to get a full tour of the school and ask all the questions you want!

question.. how hard is it for the SO of a vet student to get a visa to live/work in scotland? would the couple need to be married?

Thanks for the info, hopefulvet, it would be awesome to attend an open day while i'm over here. I've been poking around the site, and have only found one scheduled for September. If you happen to see one anywhere on the site listed for May, just throw the link up on here. thanks!

hmmm maybe I was wrong and it is in September. I just remember RVC's being in May...thought they would be the same. However, I would email them and ask about seeing the school, and explain you are only in Scotland for a little while longer and they could maybe make an exception. Or, perhaps they could set you up with a student who would be willing to show you around. If not, I would just show up there and start looking around (with the appropriate amount of stealth of course :ninja: ). This may be your only chance to visit the school, so take advantage!

DollyLlama, I am not sure about SO's getting visas. You would probably need to line up a job for him before you got there so that the employer might be able to support his visa. It is easy if you're married though.

So perhaps this may make no sense whatsoever... but i remember reading somewhere that if I were accepted w. these late applications tot he 4 year graduate program that I would have to pay Everything up front :wow: . liek for all 4 years??..Please please please tell me im wrong/stupid/crazy....😛

No you don't have to pay all up front. You have the option to pay all up front, and save yourself 2000 pounds in the process. Unless you have the money up front already or figure that you can borrow it now and incur less than 2000 pounds interest, it might not be the best idea. Another thing to consider is what you think your national currency is going to do over the next few years - your currency going up or down $0.10 versus the pound could save / cost you thousands.

Hmm, thats a great idea. I know i've walked by certain bits of the vet school, but it would be awesome to check it out from the inside. I grab my secret stealthy mode outfit and get on that 😎

annaig (or any other people at Dick or foreign schools), were you accepted to any US schools? If so, why did you choose Dick? I'm trying to decide between Dick and Kansas. I was just accepted to the GEP as they were accepting late North American apps.

Do any North Americans bring pets with them? I don't have any at the moment, but REALLY REALLY want to get a dog over the summer. I know someone who went to Glasgow and she was able to bring hers with her without having to put it through quarantine.

is there as much emphasis on computer use and technology at Dick as there is at US schools?

In my conditional offer, they recommended that I get additional large/farm animal experience. Would I potentially be able to use it for EMS?

What is the International Memorandum of Understanding with CSU?

When will the new facility be finished?

Does anyone over there have cars? Do you need them?

Congratulations! I can only answer to the pet question as i have two small dogs i'm trying to get over. If you got a dog today, you will not have enough time to get him/her over there for the start of GEP. My recommendation would be to get one over there if you are bent on doing it.

The short of it is you have to go through an extensive process of microchipping, vaccinating for rabies and then getting a titer drawn. Even if your dog was already microchipped and vaccinated, but the vet didn't read and record the microchip before vaccinating, you have to re-vaccinate and then wait 21 days to draw the blood. You cannot get a pet into Scotland until 6 months from the date the blood was drawn. It is a hassle and a half and then you have to arrange the transportation which is mucho dinero. Get a pooch in Scotland after you get settled in and you will be so far ahead of the curve.

I am sold on UofE and if I can find someone to watch my dogs until i can pick them up in December, i will be going there. Congrats again!

I think I can answer some of these.
1) I don't know about anyone else, but I get the feeling I am one of the few or only one who got accepted to a US school but is choosing Edinburgh. I am choosing Edinburgh because it is in the best location (for me), I want to travel more, it is going to be cheaper for me, I think I will like the people there better, and it is just as good as any school here. I think people who are accepted to Edinburgh and schools here usually opt to go to school here because they know less about Edinburgh, don't want to move far away from family, or they have an in-state/cheaper school.

Computer use and Technology: Yes, I would say there is just as much computer emphasis as here, if not more. They are very into e-learning and even have staff that run it, they have podcasting, EEVeC, and even cameras connected online so you can view animals in the barn/stalls from your computer (I forget why, but they do).

The Oncology center will be finished this year (or may already be finished), and the new teaching facility is said to be done by the start of the 2010 school year (this information is on their website).

Some local students probably have cars, but you definitely do not need one and it is probably more of a hassle to have one than to not.

Does anyone know how the financial aid process works with international veterinary schools? I'm a U.S. resident so I'm wondering if I can apply for U.S. federal loans (and enough to cover tuition) for veterinary school.

Check with the school of interest. Both Glasgow and RVC, and I would guess Edinburgh and Dublin, as they are AVMA accredited, allow you to apply for both Stafford and GradPLUS loans. This allows you to borrow up to the Cost of Attendance (Tuition + Cost of Living), subject to certain conditions. There are other threads on SDN which deal with this. In addition, check out the FAFSA website for more information on student loans.

Bumping this up with a few questions. Any info would be great.

Does anybody know attrition rates, in particular for the 4-yr GEP? (ex. # students matriculating vs. # students graduating)

Annaig mentioned the new curriculum - is there info on how it is changing or what will be different this year?

How common is it for students to need to re-sit exams? (% of students)

As far as I can tell, it looks like the first year of classes for the GEP are at Summerhall, then most everything moves out to Easter Bush for the next 3. Sound right?

Thanks!

Hi I'm looking into housing right now and would appreciate some advice.
From what I can understand I should find a place close to the Summerhall buildings. I read that there are buses that can take you to the Easter Bush campus in front of the Summerhall building. Is this correct?? Thanks in advance.🙂

Summerhall is where classes are first year. There is a public bus that takes you from there to Easter Bush where some classes may be held 1st year and all will be held for the rest of the time. Like most major cities, Edinburgh has pretty efficient public transportation. The bus system runs all over the city, you don't necessarily need to live close to summerhall if you don't want to. There are plenty of other bus stops that run along the same line you could live near. Areas where many students live are Marchmont, Tollcross, Morningside, Newington, and Bruntsfield.

Cheers hopefulvet! Thanks for the response. This really opens up my housing options 🙂

sweet! CSU was a school I would have really liked to apply to and attend, but they couldn't accept a non-electronic recommendation 🙁 Guess I'll have a chance to go there for an externship or project while I'm at Edinburgh...just hope it's not a selective/competitive thing for only a few students...

Its officially I will be attending classes at Dick Vet Starting August!! It so nice to finally have a decision.

Hey Hopefulvet, are you planning on staying in res the first year? or did you line up a flat?

I'm living in a flat, I really didn't want to live in uni housing anymore and the location of the flat I found is better. It's also better value I think.

Just got a bunch of stuff in the mail from Edinburgh. There's info on clubs, fresher's week, and much more! I can't decide which club I want to join! It's between rugby, rock climbing, riding, or football (soccer). I wish I could do them all 🙁 I can't wait till august!

Anyone else staying in Pollock for the first five weeks?

After that, I'm undecided. Post-grad housing appears to only be available on 51 week lets, as opposed to 37 week lets like the undergrad housing.

On a side not, I'm planning on arriving sometime on the 7th or 8th... anyone care to get together for some dinner and drinks on the 8th or 9th? Thought it might be nice to get to know my future classmates =)

I'll be in Pollock Halls for August too. I'm up for drinks when you get in, I should arriving on the 5th.

Hey everyone. I'm starting the Dick Vet's 5 year program in September and going to Edinburgh for a short visit July 9-13 to check things out. Will anyone be around at that time? I would love to meet some current or future vet students while I'm there. I'll be getting a tour of the vet facilities Monday, July 13th. Can you all think of anything else I should absolutely do/ see in Edinburgh before the big move in September?

I just got the list of recommended clothing/supplies and got really excited! Steel-toed wellies!

So much to do still! Getting a visa is really turning into a huge hassle, thanks mostly to my loan lender and their complete inability and unwillingness to take the necessary steps to correct their own mistakes.
:boom:

If it is possible to switch loan lenders for the second year, I will certainly be looking for a new one! (and that is if I can even get a visa and attend school this year, which is something that my lender seems to be working hard to prevent.)

Has anyone managed to figure out WHEN we need the required clothing? I saw mention that we'll need the coveralls and wellingtons for the first animal husbandry class, but I'm not sure - that can't mean the intro class on Tuesday, the 11th, can it?

As of right now, I'm planning to be in Pollock for the five week session, and hope I can find something while 20,000 other students are also looking for housing. 🙄 Actually had a bad dream about that the other night - everybody knew how to find housing except me.

I agree - rock climbing, rugby, riding, all sound like fun. Also appealing is the pony trekking club!

Tiempo, who is your loan lender? I'm using Sallie Mae and I just called them and asked them to send me a letter stating the approval of my loan and how much it is and stuck that with my visa app...I just sent in my application today finally. I did everything as soon as I possibly could, but thanks to this biometric info requirement, the earliest I could get my fingerprint scanning appointment was today (and this was when I looked at available appointment times 3 weeks ago!!). Then, since I happen to be in NY, I went to the British Consulate to drop off the envelope, but they wouldn't let me hand deliver it🙄 So I had to mail it to them from a post office literally 50 feet away...
Now while I'm on vacation I'm going to be worrying about whether my application is approved or even arrived there instead of enjoying myself...

I think the clothing is required for that first class on Tuesday actually. I'm just going to go to Hewat's when I first get there and buy everything.

I also had a pre-vet school nightmare. I dreamed that I was in anatomy lab and I got stuck with the worst lab partner and got last pick on the specimens!

I'm actually using Sallie Mae as well. I called three weeks ago for a loan letter (as soon as I had my visa letter from the school), and still do not have one. Apparently, telling the first person I spoke to that I needed a hard copy of the letter on original letterhead mailed to me was not sufficient, as I received an email with the letter last week. So I called again and told them I needed a hard copy (not an email!) with x, y, and z in the letter (reading from the information I have from the UK Border Agency) as soon as possible. They admitted they screwed up with the first letter, but were still telling me it would take 7-10 business days for me to get the new letter, and refused to send it via any expedited service. That was last Wednesday. They sent me a copy of the letter that they said they were putting in the mail that day, and it was missing required information (as per UK border agency). Called again Thursday. Explained this to the nice people. They emailed me a copy of supposedly the third letter they were sending. It was the exact same letter they sent me the day before, down to the same date, missing the same information. Called again Friday. Asked them to please just mail me a hard copy of the original letter they emailed on Tuesday, just please print it on letterhead and put it in the mail.

My biometrics appointment was last week. The entire application is supposed to be submitted within two weeks of the biometrics appointment. I STILL (3 weeks after requesting it) do not have a hard copy of the loan letter.

Really, IMO, if you are going to admit you screwed up by emailing the first letter when it should have been snail-mailed, and you took 10 business days before you ever actually got around to sending this email so it was 10 business days before I ever knew there was a problem (while I was anxiously checking my mailbox every day), then the least you can do is maybe try to get it right the second, third, or fourth time and send it by priority mail or overnight the thing.

I was told today by Sallie Mae that they were told by UK officials that versions 2 and 3 should be sufficient for a visa to be granted, and that it does not need all the information I was told it does. Great. Love to give it a try. Will do that just as soon as I get a copy in the mail.

hopeful, this won't do you much good now, but if anyone is still dealing with visa issues and is near New York, Chicago, or LA, they are doing in-person appointments for Tier 4 student apps this summer only. I think I'm going to go to L.A. to try to get this done. Haven't looked at the other hours, but L.A. is doing one hour a day, two days a week, and you apparently must have a confirmed printout of your appointment to be admitted to the consulate office (and have everything else completed ahead of time, including biometrics). They're supposed to have a pretty quick turn-around with these in-person appointments, which is the reason I'm considering going. I'd rather know quickly that I don't have the right documents, and maybe still have time to get it sorted.

The bad dreams are great - now I get to stress in my sleep as well!

Tiempo, I don't know why they're taking so long for you, but I got my letter within a few days; I didn't even check if it had all the info they asked for, but it has the Sallie Mae logo at the top with their contact info, my name and address, my account #, loan amount, lender name, guarantor name, the dates the loan is approved for, and my school (Edinburgh). So hopefully that's everything they need! I also included a print-out of my loan summary online as additional proof. I'm worried now because even though the letterhead was at the top, I don't think it was on 'letter paper'. Do you think I should call Sallie Mae, get the letter on the right type of paper and just mail it in now specifying my application #? I already feel I'm cutting it too close...:xf:hopefully everything goes smoothly from here.
