Hi all,

May I ask why you reject Temple?

Thanks,

Alex

I regretingly will have to say no to Temple. I loved their philosophy and I know that anyone who goes there will become a great dentist.

However, one of my biggest concerns was living close to the dental school. I know that there will be times when i will have to stay late on campus to finish a waxing project or study. Temple's area is very unsafe, especially at night. I would just quiver knowing that a bigger challenge awaits me at night.

I had to live withing 10-20 minute walking distance of the school. I do not plan to have a car. I do not want to take a subway or buses. Most of the students I spoke with at Temple lived about 10- 20 miles away from the school. Some students who did not have cars said that taking the bus or subway means that they have to cut out at least 2-3 hours just for commuting. I could not take that in anyway.

Another reason is that I do not want to pay for patients who do NOT pay for their procedures. At Temple if a patient pays, you pay for them if you want credit. I brushed that off, until i met someone who was a fifth year there. I asked him what happened and he said that the school had not received $6,500 bucks from procedures he had done. So if he wanted to graduate he needed to pay $6,500 or redo his year and procedures. I was shocked.

I did not want to deal with running after patients. Temple gets patients primarliy from very high poverty areas and they are very desperate and many do not pay, as expected.

all i know is that i want to live close and focus just on being a good dentist. I do not want to waste time commuting and running after patients. For this reason I have to say no.

I loved Temple. I think of all the schools i had interviews with, Temple had the strongest clinical program. It was filled with patients.. But, i had to reject it because i got into my state school . Also, I wasn't sure about their reputation.

Temple's reputation is very established. It is no Ivy League, but I would not hesitate to go to Temple if my criteria were met as I listed previously. The skills you have to master at Temple surpass most other dental schools. It is perfect school if you want to learn the craft of dentistry and go straight out to the workforce.

I needed more options. At PENN I feel I could go into academic dentistry right after going there. I do want to work in a private setting and teach at the same time. PENN can prepare me for the various leadershp roles I wish to pursue.

I haven't gotten into my state school yet, and I most likely will be in a bind if I do. However, I have received a lot of problems from them left and right. My state school is a number school. In my opinion, they could care less how passionate you are about dentistry and as long as you have a 3.5 and a 21 DAT you are in.

I really wished my state had a dental school like UF or TX schools. When I am established I am gonna move to a state with a few dental schools so my kids don't have to deal with the arrogance of just one school that has a big head.

wasn't impressed with temple at all. lombard was talking about its state of art facility. didn't see it. thought he was trying too hard to sell the school like a bad car salesman. questionable reputation, neighborhoood, facility, etc. the school provides excellent clinical training (at least that's what i heard) BUT there are plenty of other schools that provide excellent clinical training.

haha, hey type-s how did you like the NASA floors? All the dental students whom I worked with told me that here are no such things as NASA floors.

To be quite honest many school do not offer enough clinical backround to go into private practice. Start asking questions like what type of articulators are used? What is the schools philosophy of occlusion? How do you solve the chief complaint of a patient when they are in pain? The didactic part of dentistry can be read in any book. You need the right enviornment to learn how to look a patient in the eye (teeth) and reconstruct a dentition! Temple offers this opportunity. There is nothing like being a wet fingered Dentist! By the way, I bought a car from Lombard. He is a great salesman!

everyone has different opinions about everything. glad to hear you like temple. btw, what does he drive?

Desidentist,

Can you explain this fifth year temple student's situation further? Why would he not take out 6,500 in loans instead of being held back a year and pay 33,000 in tuition?

Desidentist,

I was wondering the same thing. It just doesn't seem to make sense. To pay another year of tuition.....plus miss out on a year of earnings working as a dentist. I'm not doubting that they told you that but there must be more to the story. Just curious.

He had maxed out his loans on dental school and undergraduate. He didn't redo the full year including classes..he just had to finish the clinical requirements. I don't know if he was charged tuition or not. I'm going to call his friend that I worked closely with and see what was up with him.
